Butch
Morgan, Karen Mal & Ken Gaines
Never
let it be said that Claude "Butch" Morgan isn't passionate about life. His songs are often
spiritual in nature, but they're full of fun and
carry simple but powerful messages.
Butch
Morgan has an ability to take life's simplicity
and put a striking message inside in the form
of a song, a great example being his "God
Drives A Pick-up Truck". Morgan's "Blubberball"
attests to all that can go wrong when you don't
take care of yourself, and is a song performed
entirely with one chord. As Butch says, "It
starts off in G, then goes to G for the solos,
then we wrap it up in G."
Based in Austin, TX, Karen Mal has created a name for herself as a captivating singer, instrumentalist and songwriter. Ranging from charming to seductive, impressionistic to philosophical, her songs have brought her nationwide acclaim. She's won top awards from the Wildflower Arts and Music Festival in Texas, the Tucson Folk Festival and the Portland Songwriters Association and has also been a three time New Folk Finalist at Kerrville, emerging artist at Falcon Ridge and a finalist at the Sisters Folk Festival.
 |
Houston area singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer Ken Gaines has the goal of writing great songs in just about every genre and style. You won't be able to put a finger on what he does from sweet lyrical ballads, to double entendre blues, to swingin' jazz, and redneck rock. Onstage Ken is both into the songs and the moment. "Live performance for me is the culmination of all my thinking and practice. It's like a religious experience. I want you to laugh and cry on the same night and I hope you go home feeling like you've fallen in love all over again with someone or something you hold very dear".
 |
Do NOT miss this show ... Butch's wonderful character and humorous rapport onstage will have you laughing for sure. With Karen you don't just get hot licks; you get melody, counterpoint, and a sense of rhythm that eases the whole sound deeper into the groove.
Ken brings vocal range, supple guitar work and lyrics which are both powerful and poetic, and highlight his skills as a story teller and observer of life.

Big
Lizard Boys together with Hard Times Troubadors
Sharing a night of music, Big Lizard Boys has paired up with Hard Times Troubadors, JPHH's Hard Times Soup & Music Kitchen house band.
Comprised
of band members Bill Aspinwall, Mike Crippen and
Mike Darnell, Big Lizard Boys incorporate
guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass and harmonica into
an eccentric blend of folk, rock and
blues. Influences
include a whole lotta bands (even a few musicians)
(and all their splintered offspring), John Faheys
dog, and a whole lotta the classic and contemporary
blues masters. Playing predominantly original
material, they add a few traditional and classic
tunes to their set list and on occasion will bring
out the infamous Cachaça Rhythm Section
for some home brew, front porch, foot-stomping
music with a Texas flavor.
|
Wednesday night regulars Bob Yoh, Jeff Tompkins, Danny Jones and Tony Ryan, collectively known as the Hard Times Troubadors, will perform the opening set this evening. Then following the Big Lizard Boys' presentation, members from both groups will take to the stage for a shared set of pickin' and singin'.

Songwriters Workshop
From top sideman/bassist for Bonnie Raitt, John Mayall, CSN, Maria Muldaur and Ringo Starr to award-winning singer/songwriter, Freebo continues to push his creative envelope. His honors include 2007 Los Angeles Music Awards “Best Folk Artist”, winner 2007 South Florida Folk Fest Songwriting Contest, 5 nominations in 5 different categories Just Plain Folks Awards and 2 songs in the top 10 of the USA Songwriting Contest.
Now he has chosen to share the many things he’s learned over the years. In this hybrid workshop, Freebo will give you specific tools and hints for your songwriting, song-arrangement, and performing, all within the context of honoring your special gifts and giving yourself permission and the courage to become the artist/musician you’ve always wanted to be. In a world of judgement and criticism, we are filled with the voices of others telling us how to be. Freebo will help you to find your own voice, figuratively and literally.
Along with the craft of songwriting, he will also help you to shape your song with arrangement, chord substitutions, and phrasing ideas. And in performing your song, Freebo covers the topics of fear, preparation, tools, timing, and communication. How do you connect to your audience? You become one with them!
The workshop will be held from 11:00am until 2:00pm at JP Hops House. The bar will be closed to the public during the workshop.
