Texas Songwriter Showcase
Some of the best singer songwriters from around the state of Texas grace the JPHH stage on the second Friday of each month
. Smythe & Taylor and Mark Beets are the featured artists for this evening's showcase.
Smythe & Taylor: TC Smythe and Gary Taylor, performing together as a duo since 2000, play a wide variety of traditional and contemporary acoustic music. With five albums between them, Smythe & Taylor demonstrate their musical and songwriting abilities that ranges from lighthearted to poignant. Both are members of HAAM and Houston Fort Bend Songwriters Association, of which Gary is the current president. Come welcome them home; the dynamic duo has just returned from their debut West Texas & World Tour.
Mark Beets: Mark has a sound which has been called "Organic Americana". According to Ken Gaines, fellow musician, "Mark's music will sneak up on you. One minute you're listening politely and the next minute you're either laughing or crying your eyes out." It's fresh, different from most of the stuff out there today. Long Ago & Many Days is Mark's debut collection of songs produced by White Cat Productions.
Michael Pope: Co-founder and co-host of this showcase, Michael has been writing songs for a couple years now. Many of his original's are open tuned, 5 finger picking, folk jazz instrumentals, but his lyrics are strong and reflect his life's experiences. Michael recently released his debut album.
Willie B: Willie describes himself as a bluesy guitar player, but he is so much more. He is a gifted and diverse guitar player who writes and performs in many musical genres. Willie writes and sings songs around the people in his life. He has won "Song of the Year" and "Songwriter of the Year" in HFBSA. Willie has recorded four albums to date.
The Texas Songwriters' Showcase always fills the stage with vast musical experience, guaranteeing that the show will be an exhilarating musical phenomenon! Come experience the phenom!

SORRY, THIS SHOW WILL BE RESCHEDULED
September 14,
2006 - Thursday

Fahl & Folk
The band Fahl & Folk is the newest vehicle for David Fahl’s music. The basic sound is the traditional folkie vocal, acoustic guitar, and harmonica, with Michael Farber’s electric bass adding a groove that turns up the energy level way past the cliched mellow associated (often in error) with the folksinger trip. This pair is frequently augmented by Jimmy Deen on acoustic and electric guitars, and Chaz Nadege on keyboard and snare drum.
The Fahl & Folk sound is both familiar and innovative. The instrumentation is simple and familiar-sounding. The songs hit comfortable grooves and go places where folksingers are seldom heard. Fahl’s songs come from a perspective that uses all the traditions we hear around us and twists them into new combinations, telling stories about lovers, murderers, and the helpless schmoes who just have a hard time dealing with life in this bizarre new millenium. When the band does a cover tune, it’s rarely one from the standards of ‘classic rock’, and it never sounds like the way you’re used to hearing it.
So come hear for yourself!

Willie B & The Silverbacks
Tonight we are please to present Willie B's newest musical endeavour, Willie B & The Silverbacks.

Willie writes and sings songs around the people in his life. He has won "Song of the Year" and "Songwriter of the Year" in HFBSA. Willie has recorded four albums to date.
Joining Willie on stage tonight will be: Dennis Challman - praiseworthy pedal steel player from Blanco, Texas, Otis Futhermucker - a hellacious harmonica player immortalized as a Spudstock potato and Jeff Hoofard - a paramount percussionist and dy-no-mite drummer deserving moo admiration.

SORRY, THIS SHOW WILL BE RESCHEDULED
September 16, 2006 - Saturday

Guy Schwartz & the New Jack Hippies
Texas' premiere blues, rock, hippie jam band, led by singer/songwriter Guy Schwartz and often including his sidekick/co-writer, Roger Tausz will be jammin' out right here on the JPHH stage.
Schwartz and his merry band of musicians, the New Jack Hippies, can match the enthusiasm of any band. About 30 great musicians make up the core of this band but more than 300 claim membership in the collective, which he describes as a "Texas blues rock hippie jam band." Some play regularly -- like keyboardist Chaz Nadege and Schwartz's long-time collaborator, bassist Roger Tausz -- while others just show up for gigs from time to time. The gigs they've played for the past year have had anywhere from 7 to 18 musicians, of which 3 - 5 are leaders of their own bands. "I never intended to have the responsibility of a band," Schwartz says. "It was an accident."
Guy has played with Muddy Waters, Lionel Hampton, John Lee Hooker, Sam 'Lightning' Hopkins, B.W. Stevenson, Jimmy Reed, Blaze Foley, Roy Head, Sonny James, Little Joe Washington, Trudy Lynn, Fever Tree, Freddy Fender, Chuck Berry, Milton Hopkins, Rick Lee and the Night Owls, Big Daddy Gumbo & the Sheetrockers, Chip Arnold & The Terraplanes, Heath Spencer Philip, Sandy Hickey, Gerald Gray, Michael Williams, Steve Radney, Don Sanders, Ashton Savoy, Opie Hendrix and Gloria Edwards.
His band has opened up for or shared the bill with Todd Rundgren & Utopia, U2, Eddie Harris, Duran Duran, Ramones, Delbert McClinton, Sparks, David Lindley, Little Feat, Huey Lewis and the News, Eric Johnson, Carolyn Wonderland, Muddy Waters, Rush, Golden Earring, Johnny Winter, Romantics, Jeff Beck and ZZ Top.
His songs have been recorded by Gloria Edwards, Relayer, The Calvin Owens Blues Orchestra, Z-Rocks, Kinky Friedman, Opie Hendrix, Anthony Moore, Father's Chief, Heath Spencer Phillip, Little Joe Washington and The New Jack Hippies.
We are very excited and honored to have Guy Schwartz & The New Jack Hippies play here. Never heard them play before? Well, better be here...this is a show you should not miss!

The Hudsons

The Hudsons are an original acoustic trio from Austin, TX. Their genuine love of performing brought them together in 2002. They started out as a talented and quirky songwriter duo, Hudson Mueller and Brian Hudson
play the guitars and write the songs. In time, Phoebe Hunt joined to complete the trio with her graceful fiddle playing and adding a feminine touch to the group.. The Hudsons shine in their intimate lyrics, thoughtful arrangements and charming stage presence. Their excellent songs and warm vocal harmonies make the Hudsons a must hear.
