Texas Songwriters' Showcase
Some of the best singer songwriters from around the state of Texas grace the JPHH stage on
the second Friday of each month. The featured artists for this evening's showcase are Connie Mims and David Fahl.
Connie Mims: Connie began her musical career in Houston in 1973 as a part of the group Wheatfield which evolved into St. Elmo's Fire, performing everywhere from the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, to The Troubadour in Los Angeles, to St. Croix, USVI. She has appeared on the PBS series Austin City Limits and in the classic Blue Bell Ice Cream commercial known as Texas Musicians. Most recently Connie, along with other members of Wheatfield, has released a new self-titled CD. In addition to performing her own compositions, Connie enjoys performing music from Bonnie Raitt, Radney Foster, Kim Richey, Joni Mitchell and other well-known and not so well-known songwriters.
“She sings with mountain spring clarity-pure and sweet-yet with enough emotional intensity to raise the hair on the back of your neck” ~ Houston Chronicle
David Fahl : David is a folk singer, playing an acoustic guitar, singing his own songs, and covering material by people like Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. What sets him apart from the rest?
He's got drinking songs, philosophy songs, story songs, theology songs, political songs, funny songs, sad songs, mad songs, bitter songs, cheerful songs, mean songs, and all kinds of love songs; happy love songs, guilty love songs, desperate love songs, hopeful love songs, angry love songs, dirty love songs and holy love songs. He's got songs about bad women, good women, women who go both ways, thieves, hustlers, rich men, men who work, angels, cowboys, good guys, cops, and substance abusers. Among other subjects addressed are money, marriage, adultery, revenge, true love, revolution, enlightenment, and Jesus. Fahl's songs consistently shed light on their subjects from unique and surprising perspectives. When not appearing solo David performs under the name Fahl & Folk; a band with a varying cast of characters and instruments that always includes Michael Farber on bass.

Michael Pope: Co-founder and co-host of this showcase, Michael has been writing songs for a couple years now. Many of his original's are open tuned, 5 finger picking, folk jazz instrumentals, and his lyrics are strong, reflecting his life's experiences. Michael released his debut CD The Reason for Our Time at JPHH this past February.
Willie B: Willie describes himself as a bluesy guitar player, but he is so much more. He is a gifted and diverse guitar player who writes and performs in many musical genres. Willie writes and sings songs around the people in his life. He has won "Song of the Year" and "Songwriter of the Year" in HFBSA. Willie has recorded four albums to date.
The Texas Songwriters' Showcase always fills the stage with vast musical experience, guaranteeing that the show will be an exhilarating musical phenomenon! Come experience the phenom!

Big Lizard Boys
Comprised of band members Bill Aspinwall, Mike Crippen and Mike Darnell, Big Lizard Boys incorporate guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass and harmonica into an eccentric blend of folk,
rock

and blues. Influences include a whole lotta bands (even a few musicians) (and all their splintered offspring), John Fahey’s dog, and a whole lotta the classic and contemporary blues masters. Playing predominantly original material, they add a few traditional and classic tunes to their set list and on occasion will bring out the infamous Cachaça Rhythm Section for some home brew, front porch, foot-stomping music with a Texas flavor. Richard Gaudette will present an opening set this evening.

Songwriters In The Round
Join us this evening for music from Kim Kyle, Rick Poss and Mark Beets.
Rick Poss: "As long as I can remember I've loved music. My earliest memories include hearing an endless stream of classical music from Mom's piano students. I've been writing songs since I learned my first chord." Rick has fronted his own bands and worked extensively in the U.S. and Europe with Alejandro Escovodo, Jimmy LaFave, Jack Saunders, Jim Lauderdale, Greg Trooper and Bruce Robison. He has also open shows for Mance Lipscomb, Buddy Miller, Lucinda Williams, Son Volt, Waylon Jennings, Brilly Bragg, Robert Cray and Ben Harper, among others. An accomplished guitarist, Rick has studied with Paul Buskirk and Chris Florey, but he is mostly self-taught.
Mark Beets: According to Ken Gaines, fellow musician, "Mark's music will sneak up on you. One minute you're listening politely and the next minute you're either laughing or crying your eyes out." His is a sound which has been called "Organic Americana". It's fresh, different from most of the stuff out there today. Long Ago & Many Days is Mark's debut collection of songs produced by White Cat Productions. Further details will be forthcoming.
