The
Moe Hansum Band

This 4-member band,
hailing from Houston, Texas, performs Americana
music with a strong emphasis on traditional acoustic
blues. Their Texas-bred music |
|
|
blends folk blues with a splash
of the soul and rhythm of the Mississippi Delta blues.
In concert the band presents a variety of their original
tunes, complemented by little-known covers from artists
such as Bukka White, Robert Johnson and Jimmy Reed. The
Moe Hansum Band has been together in many incarnations
since the early 1990's.
The instrumentation currently consists of two acoustic
and resonator guitarists, Mike Durbin and Chuck
Schwarz, upright acoustic bassist Sandy Buller and
drummer Stephan B. Miller. They have performed at
the Kerrville Folk Festival and many other locations
across Texas. This band of exceptionally talented
musicians is always a JP Hops House favorite. Moe's
music can be healing and therapeutic for those longing
for an authentic voice in traditional and modern
folk blues.

Tina Allen and Mitch Tiffin
Award winning singer songwriter Tina Allen has been active on the music scene for about 15 years. From rodeo cook-offs to regional festivals to weddings to membership in a variety of bands, Tina's singing has carried her across the state and beyond. Recently she has been focusing more on her songwriting and guitar playing, and she has teamed up with fellow musician Mitch Tiffin to form a duo which has been performing since May.
Mitch Tiffin is a local
Houston singer songwriter with a long history
in the music business. A while back he wandered
out of his garage, which he fondly refers to as
his studio, and started playing the local open
mics. His songs are mostly a mix of county, folk,
and blues, but with his own special spice. Whatever
Mitch brings, originals or covers, you can be
sure that his songs will get inside your head
and your heart.

Texas Songwriter Showcase
Some of the best singer
songwriters from around the state of Texas grace
the JPHH stage on the second Friday of each month.
The featured artists for this evening's showcase
is Jimmy Pizzitola.
Jimmy Pizzitola: His songs are simple. His voice is pure. He believes in the songs he sings and takes the listener with him wherever he chooses to go. Jimmy’s voice is one that appeals to both the old standards (people, that is) and the new editions. Worldly-aware and introspective, his songs seem to tap into the collective consciousness of our time – which explains his ever-expanding fan base.
Willie B: Willie
describes himself as a bluesy guitar player, but
he is so much more. He is a gifted and diverse
guitar player who writes and performs in many
musical genres. Willie writes and sings songs
around the people in his life. He has been a past
recipient of HFBSA's "Song of the Year"
and "Songwriter of the Year". Willie
has recorded four albums to date and is currently
working on his fifth solo project.
The Texas Songwriters' Showcase
is the longest running showcase in Houston. These
songwriters will take to the stage to entertain
you with colossal musical talent and wide-ranging
experience ... you will not be disappointed.

Larry
Sepulvado
Larry's Americana roots' spin on Louisiana swamp
rock and Cajun music fits comfortably between
the outskirts of Lafayette, Louisiana and the
country dance halls of Beaumont, Texas.
The dictionary defines "phoenix" as..
"rising from the ashes with renewed youth
to live through another cycle" and, "as
a person regarded as uniquely remarkable in some
respect". In the over thirty years I have
known Larry Sepulvado he has risen from the ashes
more than once & is remarkable in several
respects.
With the phoenix on the rise again there is reason
to believe Larry's best work lies before him!
As he rises from the ashes grab a wing and lend
an ear as Larry Sepulvado once again takes flight
on another creative journey. (Taken from Larry's
bio by Darren McMillian.)
Larry is currently working on his second CD.
Joining Larry on stage tonight will be Dennis Chalman on pedal steel guitar and Tim Ray on lead guitar.

Billy Bourbon Trio
Billy Bourbon is a singin’, songwritin’, country bluesman, son-of-a-@#$%. His songs are laced with women, whiskey and weed. Songs about birthdays and death; first loves and shooting your lover dead; suicide and raising kids; Billy covers it all. This is rockin’ Texas outlaw country at its best.
If you like Jerry Jeff Walker, Commander Cody, Guy Clark, John Prine, Jason Boland, Cross Canadian Ragweed, you'll dig Billy Bourbon.
Billy knows countless songs, and crafts his shows to suit the audience at hand, whether it’s rowdy college kids or their equally rowdy elders. As a lead guitarist he has shared the stage with Chris Duarte, Son Seals, Mason Ruffner, Jimmy Thackery, Smokin’ Joe Kubek, Rockin’ Jake, Tinsley Ellis, Papa Chubby, Dave Hole, Bernard Ellison, and countless others, while hosting a weekly Jam Night in a club he later came to own. As Billy puts it, “I jam, therefore I am”.
The current Billy Bourbon Band features veteran Texas musician Tom Rodgers on Bass, and Greg Babineaux on the Drums. Together they have a show that is funny, entertaining, and sells drinks!!!
It smells like country, tastes like rock-n-roll, and has creamy blues in the middle. Come and getcha some!!!!

Constant Billy
A new day has dawned. There's a new band in the neighborhood, Constant Billy. Take the traditional music of England and Ireland, stir in a little rock, classical and swing, add intricate harmonies, shake in the accompaniment of Bodhran, guitar, tin whistle, recorder and bouzouki, sprinkle in a dash of hilarious between-songs banter, and you have a band that will leave you reeling. Constant Billy has been recognized as probably the best all-around folk a-cappella singers in Houston.
Emily Standish - vocals, tin whistle, recorder and percussion.
After years with Houston Symphony Chorus, and as featured soloist with several theater groups including Houston Revels and Trinity Opera Theater, Emily began singing with smaller ensembles in 1997. Has worked with the popular folk group Furagh Larq and the Early Music a cappella group Voces Dei. A powerful and passionate performer, Emily “sings with a purity of sound that is a joy to hear" and has "A voice like honey melted into crystal."
 |
Bill Galbraith - vocals, guitars, and Irish bouzouki.
Began playing in a rock group at 12, switched to Trad in 1977 as a founder of Freeborn, the first professional Celtic band in Texas. Moved on to the folk-rock group Four Bricks out of Hadrian’s Wall and sang doo-wop in Dr. T and the Tuxtones. Later worked with the a cappella band Nobody’s Reel. Has performed at festivals and clubs in Britain and America, and has extensive TV and radio credits including appearances on National Public Radio's All Things Considered and live internet performance.
 |
Dave Randall - electric bass, baritone ukulele, percussion, vocals.
The newest member of Constant Billy, Dave joined the music scene back in 1978 playing guitar, bass and drums in his high school jazz ensemble and in a neighborhood garage band. While at Sam Houston State University, he studied music theory and played bass in the SHSU jazz band. Over the years he's been in a variety of alternative music groups, including The Missiles, Mary Tyler Moron, Von Hindenburg, The Treehouse Project, Lugnut, Saturn X9000 and The Beige Dots. Dave has also been spotted playing guitar and singing at open mic nights around Houston.

White Beets with Jack Saunders
Mark Beets and Saylor White, two of the Houston area's most esteemed singer
songwriters, have joined forces to become the
White Beets. To their honor thus far, the duo
was a winner at the Songwriters Serenade in 2009;
individually Beets and White have each released
award winning CDs, plus both have penned songs
recorded by other artists.
East Texas born writer of
songs, poetry and short stories, Saylor White has written over two thousand songs in his better
than thirty years of word crafting, including
"Dress of Lace" recorded and performed
by Nanci Griffith and Lyle Lovett. Saylor is an
amazing and prolific songwriter with a musical
sense that comes as natural to him as breathing.
He is co-owner of A
Songwriters Studio in Houston, Texas.
Mark Beets has a sound which has been called "Organic
Americana". It's fresh, different from most
of the stuff out there today. In 2003 Long
Ago & Many Days, Mark's debut
collection of songs, was produced by White Cat
Productions and Beets was a finalist in the Wildflower
Festival songwriting competition. Mark's song
"The Road's Not Long Enough" was selected as the
lead single on The Houston Association of Acoustic
Musicians' first compilation CD.
Jack Saunders will be joining
Saylor and Mark on stage tonight. |

The Louvres
The Louvres are back together again! They were a very popular Houston band back in the 80's. The band members are Sean Walters, Jimmy Jones, Lew Andre Mathews, Johnny McNally and Mickey Williams. We are so excited to have these guys play on our stage.
The Louvres play original 'Americana meets classic rock' written by Sean Walters. Their sound is electric guitar-based rock and roll with shades of country rock. The Louvres create lush arrangements fueled by dual guitar attacks, roots rock bass lines, drums and fronted by killer vocals. Solid songs with attention to lyrical content find the five musicians combining to make a distinctive and authentic sound.
Sean Walters is the band leader, songwriter, singer & rhythm guitar player. Sean was a well known fixture on the Houston music scene. During the 80's he was known hosted the popular Sean Walters' Songwriters Showcase every Sunday night at Blythe Spirits. In the 70's Sean had a lot of success on the college circuit with a country rock band called Walters & Hickman. He also starred as Judas in a bootleg production of Jesus Christ Superstar that toured the US.
Jimmy Jones played lead guitar and arranged a lot of Sean's songs for the band. He continued to front and play guitar for various bands after the Louvres split up, including The Kick & Ragdog, Overload, and Herschel Berry. Jimmy has a long history of playing guitar in Houston.
Lew Andre Mathews also plays lead guitar. He has played guitar on albums by Lucinda Williams, Richard Dobson and he & his wife Sharon’s group The Love Band. He owns and operates Arbor Road Recording Studio in Elgin, Texas where the Louvres recorded their CD, Still Life.
Drummer Johnny McNally is a virtuoso on many instruments. His talents draw from a diverse knowledge of musical genres including rock, classical, the Broadway musical, jazz and blues. He has played bass, guitar, piano and drums in scores of productions from New York City to Los Angeles. His musicality is the heartbeat of the Louvres sound.
Mickey Williams plays bass guitar. He began playing in bar bands at the age of 14, going on to many other musical adventures. After spending most of the 90's mixing sound all over the globe for a wide range of acts, from Grammy winner Rick Trevino to platinum selling Fastball, Mickey quit the road to be a stay at home Dad to two daughters. He currently operates Goodnight Austin, a pro audio sound reinforcement company in Austin, Texas, and he has returned to his first love, playing bass behind great songwriters like Sean Walters' Louvres and Herschel Berry and the Natives.

Every 4th Sunday JP Hops House will host a NSAI Sunday Songswap from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, followed by our traditional Sunday Night Open Mic
This is not a formal meeting, program, showcase or critique format- just writers hanging out with other writers, giving and getting some inspiration. Susan
Gibson

Susan
Gibson is always happiest on the move.
Even though she's settled into a home in the Texas
Hill Country, she still puts upwards of 60,000
miles a year on her customized freightliner van.
Her 2005 release, Outer Space,
included a live version of her song "Wide
Open Spaces" which the Dixie Chicks propelled
into one of the all-time best-selling country
songs.
Susan's claim to fame is
her songwriting. Her passion whispers and roars.
Her songs are natural pearls - grains of truth
at the core, wrapped in silken melodies, and gritty
enough on the surface to guarantee authenticity.
Susan grabbed honors as
winner of the 1998 CMA "Single of the Year"
and a Grammy nomination for writing "Wide
Open Spaces," title track of Dixie Chicks'
multi-platinum Grammy Award winning album.
Joining Susan onstage this
evening will be the fantastic fiddle player Marian
Brackney.
