Sweet
Mama Cotton with Walter "Wishbone" Bonilla
Tonight
we again welcome to our stage ~ musician
~ singer ~ songwriter ~ comedienne ~ Marcy Rae,
alias Sweet Mama Cotton. Well-noted for her musical parodies; Marcy's performances often combine her incredible blues
talent with equally engaging comedy.
Tonight you can enjoy Sweet Mama Cotton and her ORIGINAL Sugar |
|
Daddy, Walter Bonilla, all evening! Walter “Wishbone” Bonilla was an integral part of the origins of the Sugar Daddies, and you can hear him on Expect Delays, Sweet Mama’s first cd, where he not only sings and plays FABULOUS guitar, but also presents some of his original music. When Marcy and Walter are rockin’, the music is hot and the joint is jumpin’.
Marcys
musical interests are diverse, but all these
influences have combined to produce a musical
approach that is inclusive of all
forms of music. Her blues repertoire includes
standards such as Stormy Monday
and Down Home Blues, as well as
classics from the jazz/blues era of Bessie Smith
and Sippie Wallace. She also rocks out on Chuck
Berry style tunes and some funky dance tunes
like Shaky Ground. Her diverse background
has expanded her repertoire to include classic
standards, folk, rock, and country music as
well as blues. Mixed in with the wide variety
of cover material is a healthy dose of her original
music.
Since
her professional debut as a musician, she has
played on bills with Ray Campi and the Rebels,
Jackson Browne, The Blasters, Blood Sweat and
Tears, and Rose Maddox. Marcy also spent some
time as keyboard player for The Drifters on
a tour through the South.
While
living in Houston, Marcy has shared the stage
with many of the Blues Legends of Texas, including
Pete Mayes, Texas Johnny Brown, Trudy Lynn,
Lavelle White, Jimmy T-99 Nelson,
Oscar Perry, Clarence Holliman, Carol Fran,
Earl Gilliam, Grady Gaines, Trudy Lynn, Carolyn
Blanchard, and Mark May. She has also been invited
to perform with Bob Margolin and Pinetop Perkins
on several occasions, and at the all-star jam
band at the W.C. Handy Awards.
Marcy
Rae, aka Sweet Mama Cotton, presents a confident
statement of affirming blues. As her motto
states, Marcy plays new Texas blues with
respect for tradition.
Please come out and join us!

Her production skills have helped many of her clients attain publishing and record deals.
Her reputation as a top-flight song troubleshooter has made her one of the most sought-after speakers, consultants and songwriting instructors in the country for organizations including TAXI, The Songwriters Connection and the Nashville Songwriters Association International.
Kim has produced custom projects for special events and festivals as well as promotional work for a major motion picture. Her musical education and background as a vocalist have helped her become one of the city's most respected vocal arrangers as well.

Some of the best singer
songwriters from around the state of Texas grace
the JPHH stage on the second Friday of each month.
The featured artists for this evening's showcase are Hans
York and Brian Hudson.
Hans York: This phenomenal
artist creates music with brilliant emotional
momentum. Hans is a consummate musician, traveling
between folk, jazz, and pop effortlessly, while
his voice soars above it all. Seeing him live,
you understand that you are experiencing a world-class
talent. His joy is infectious and his chops are
superior. His voice feels smooth, silky, and unique,
with a breathtaking three octave range that pulls
you right in. Richly textured as well as utterly
intimate, a true Renaissance musician that is
skilled in many genres, knowing exactly how to
blend them, and with the ability to sweep you
off your feet.
Brian Hudson: In bands for half of his life, these days Brian is playing under his own name and with a group called Me and B. He also just released an album called Into the Black. Most of you a probably going to be most familiar with The Hudsons (Brian Hudson and Hudson Mueller), an award-winning, original folk band out of Austin that was active for seven years.
Back in November of 2007 the mayor of Austin gave The Hudsons a key to the city and declared a “The Hudsons Day”.
Willie B: Willie
describes himself as a bluesy guitar player, but
he is so much more. He is a gifted and diverse
guitar player who writes and performs in many
musical genres. Willie writes and sings songs
around the people in his life. He has been a past
recipient of HFBSA's "Song of the Year"
and "Songwriter of the Year". Willie
has recorded four albums to date and is currently
working on his fifth solo project.
The Texas Songwriters' Showcase
is the longest running showcase in Houston. These
songwriters will take to the stage to entertain
you with colossal musical talent and wide-ranging
experience ... you will not be disappointed.
