Thirsty Thursday LIVE!
Welcome to our new acoustic music night - Thirsty Thursday LIVE!
- happening every Thursday. Come share a night of music - bring your friends - enjoy a fun start to your weekend with a tasty brew and a favorite JPHH performance.
Blind
Justice, the recently formed
Houston-area guitar duo, is tonight's musical
entertainment. Wally Brannon and Joel Marlowe
originally came together in 1983 and over the
past 25 years have shared many a stage as band
members or duo partners. The name Blind Justice
was taken from the name of a song Wally wrote
when he was in prison ... well, not really,
but you'll have to come hear them to get the
true story behind the song.

The
Moe Hansum Band

This 4-member band, hailing
from Houston, Texas, performs Americana music
with a strong emphasis on traditional acoustic
blues. Their Texas-bred music |
|
|
blends
folk blues with a splash of the soul and rhythm of the Mississippi
Delta blues. In concert the band presents a variety of
their original tunes, complemented by little-known covers from artists such as Bukka White, Robert Johnson
and Jimmy Reed. The
Moe Hansum Band has been together in
many incarnations since the early 1990's.
The
instrumentation currently consists of two acoustic
and resonator guitarists, Mike Durbin and Chuck
Schwarz, upright acoustic bassist Sandy Buller and
drummer Stephan B. Miller. They have performed at
the Kerrville Folk Festival and many other locations
across Texas. This band of exceptionally
talented musicians is
always a JP Hops House favorite. Moe's music can
be healing and therapeutic for those longing for
an authentic voice in traditional and modern folk
blues.

Texas Songwriter Showcase
Some of the best singer songwriters from around
the state of Texas grace the JPHH stage on the
second Friday of each month.
The
featured artists for this evening's showcase are Mark Zeus and Hank Woji. Please check again soon for details.
Mark Zeus: The omnipresent great god of folk/rock,
is a veteran songwriter, live performer and
recording artist whose music features an eclectic
mix of folk, country, rock and blues often intertwined
with various ethnic and indigenous rhythms.
Mark's lyrics tend to reflect experiences within
the human condition, while often addressing
social and political issues and concerns with
humor as well as urgency.
Hank Woji: With song styles ranging from Bluegrass and country through folk, blues and rock & roll, Hank paints an insightful portrait of our fast fading American dream. His
first CD, Medallion, released in 2005,
combined elements of folk, blues, and rock with
Brasilian, Cuban, African and Indian rhythms. Hank's latest release, American Dreams, will inspire you to “raise your voices for justice and peace”.
Willie
B: Willie describes himself as a bluesy guitar
player, but he is so much more. He is a gifted
and diverse guitar player who writes and performs
in many musical genres. Willie writes and sings
songs around the people in his life. He has been
a past recipient of HFBSA's "Song
of the Year" and "Songwriter of the
Year". Willie has recorded four albums to
date and is currently working on his fifth solo
project.
The Texas
Songwriters' Showcase
is
the
longest running
showcase in Houston. These songwriters will take
to the stage to entertain you with colossal musical
talent
and
wide-ranging
experience ... you
will not be disappointed.

Thirsty
Thursday LIVE!
Steve
Brooks

Welcome
to our new acoustic music night - Thirsty Thursday
LIVE! -
|
|
happening
every Thursday. Come share a night of music -
bring your friends - enjoy a fun start to your
weekend with a tasty brew and a favorite JPHH
performance. Tonight we are extremely
pleased to to have Steve Brooks as our musical
performer.
Cross two famous guys named
Brooks - Garth and Mel - and you get Austin folksinger
Steve Brooks. He's got a song for every occasion,
from the sublime to the ridiculous and
back. His tunes range from comic commentary and
crackerbarrel philosophy to lyrical love ballads
and sharp-edged snapshots of Texas and the world.
Best-known for writing a song-a-week for Jim Hightower's
radio show,Steve's work has been recorded by
artists like Kevin So, Emily Kaitz and Slaid Cleaves,
who calls him, "A great unsung songwriter
of Austin." He's had music in two films and
appeared in two more, including the 2004 release
"Barbecue: A Texas Love Story."
Brooks
is also a journalist in Austin. A master of words
as well as music, he was featured on TV's "I've
Got a Secret" as six-time World Pun Champion.
He says that making puns is good for his writing.
"Punning keeps my mind limber. No one should
work with words unless they can also play with
them ... Language is like Play-Doh," he muses.
"I love to bend and shape it in new ways,
and occasionally eat it when no one's looking."
When he's not in a coffeehouse or a beer joint,
you can catch him behind a pulpit, guest-preaching
on topics like songwriting and spirituality.
If
there's a common thread to Steve's songs, it's
that we can change the world when we look at it
from a different angle - or from several angles
at once. Steve puts it a bit more poetically,
"A single new star rearranges a whole constellation."

Butch
Morgan & Frank Meyer
Never
let it be said that Claude "Butch" Morgan isn't passionate about life. His songs are often
spiritual in nature, but they're full of fun and
carry simple but powerful messages.
Butch
Morgan has an ability to take life's simplicity
and put a striking message inside in the form
of a song, a great example being his "God
Drives A Pick-up Truck". Morgan's "Blubberball"
attests to all that can go wrong when you don't
take care of yourself, and is a song performed
entirely with one chord. As Butch says, "It
starts off in G, then goes to G for the solos,
then we wrap it up in G."
He has won several notable songwriting awards including The Wildflower Music Festrival Song Writing Contest, he was a finalist in the Mountain Stage Newsong Competition 2008, a finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Contest in both 2005 and 2008, and was awarded honorable mention in the recent Mid-Atlantic Songwriting Contest.
The songs of Frank Meyer range from the sensitive to the hilarious, and from passionate to twisted. Two of his songs have been licensed to movies and his voice can be heard on various T.V. and radio spots. "Savage of Salvage" from his CD Scrounger's Paradise was recently featured on NPR's "Car Talk." He was a regional winner of the New Folk Songwriters Competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival.
Frank is currently performing for private parties, children's concerts, coffee houses, churches, and bars, both solo and with his three bands "The Pancake Batter Boys and Girls," "The Sons of Peaches" and "Him and His Harem to Scare 'Em" which include some of Austin's very finest singers and players.
Directly from the heart to the funnybone, Frank Meyer's music is medicine. "Picture George Carlin's view of the world sung by Leon Redbone. His music, thought provoking one minute, humorous the next, is a roller coaster ride you will not want to end." ~ Robert Scarbrough,
Jefferson Freedom Café,
Ft. Worth, Texas
Do NOT miss this show ... Butch's wonderful character and humorous rapport onstage will have you laughing for sure, and Frank's edgy, witty and funny songs complete the package.
