November 3, 2007 - Saturday
Butch Morgan and Doug Fesler
Never let it be said the Claude "Butch" Morgan isn't passionate about life. His songs are often spiritual in nature, but they're full of fun and carry simple but powerful messages.
Butch Morgan has an ability to take life's simplicity and put a striking message inside in the form of a song, a great example being his "God Drives A Pick-up Truck". Morgan's "Blubberball" attests to all that can go wrong when you don't take care of yourself, and is a song performed entirely with one chord. As Butch says, "It starts off in G, then goes to G for the solos, then we wrap it up in G."
Joining Butch onstage tonight will be harmonica player and back-up vocalist Doug Fesler. Doug has played in bars, churches, coffee houses, dance halls, restaurants, house parties, concerts and beer gardens around Texas for about 35 years in small ensembles, dance bands and as a solo artist.
Doug has published and recorded his own music and has worked in studios with other artists, such as The Lucky Tomblin Band, Augie Meyers, Kevin and the Blacktears and Charlie Beall. He is a guitarist, vocalist and harmonicat, who clearly enjoys playing for and entertaining people. "I tried playing for just my dog, but she can't hold the Bic lighter and sway rhythmically. No thumbs."
Don't miss this show ... two wonderful characters with a humorous rapport onstage. You'll laugh for sure!

Texas Songwriter Showcase
Some of the best singer songwriters from around the state of Texas grace the JPHH stage on the second Friday of each month. The featured artists for this evening's showcase are Matt Harlan and Jimmy Pizzitola.
Matt Harlan: A songwriter's songwriter, composing scenic landscapes and pointed statements disguised as songs ... often non-linear, but always melodic. Matt took First Place in the 2006 American Songwriter Lyric Contest for his song "Waiting For Godot." His debut CD, Live and Rambling, will be available at the show.
Jimmy Pizzitola: His songs are simple.  His voice is pure.  He believes in the songs he sings and takes the listener with him wherever he chooses to go.  Jimmy’s voice is one that appeals to both the old standards (people, that is) and the new editions. Worldly-aware and introspective, his songs seem to tap into the collective consciousness of our time – which explains his ever-expanding fan base.
Willie B: Willie describes himself as a bluesy guitar player, but he is so much more. He is a gifted and diverse guitar player who writes and performs in many musical genres. Willie writes and sings songs around the people in his life. He has been a past recipient of HFBSA's "Song of the Year" and "Songwriter of the Year". Willie has recorded four albums to date and is currently working on his fifth solo project.
The Texas Songwriters' Showcase is the longest running showcase in Houston. These songwriters will take to the stage to entertain you with colossal musical talent and wide-ranging experience ... you will not be disappointed.

Across the Water and Smythe and Taylor
Sharing the Night
True to their name, Across The Water features an all-acoustic repertoire from both sides of the Atlantic - just like the players. Steve Goodchild hails from the north of England, and Bob Lahmeyer and Paul Cooper are natives, respectively, of Missouri and Texas. Despite diverse geographic roots, they share some key things in common.
Across the Water
"I think we all hooked into folk music early, and started playing and singing when we were teenagers," says Paul, who remembers performing "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" for his high school assembly in the 1960s; Steve's father had to drive him to gigs when he started performing in folk clubs at fifteen, and Bob recalls his college band "practicing Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young numbers a capella for hours on road trips until we had it nailed!"
When ATW comes to play, they show up with a lot of instruments. All three play guitar. Bob can pick a hard-as-nails bluegrass banjo on one number, and then turn a deft hand to the bass on the next one. Paul plays backup and solo mandolin, and has recently been seen behind more exotic things like bouzoukis and octave mandolins, holding Steve totally accountable for his new fascination for things with more than six strings! Depending on the performance, Steve might come out toting a mandolin, mandola, a cittern or even the mandocello he calls "Bloodaxe". Stir three capable voices into the instrumental mix and you have all the ingredients for a veritable smorgasbord of new and traditional music from their respective countries and regions. They have also been known to put aside the wood & wire and, without the benefit of that safety-net, deliver the occasional unaccompanied number in distinctive tight, three-part harmony.
These guys are passionate about their music, enjoy performing it and sharing it with their audiences.
TC Smythe and Gary Taylor, performing together as a duo since 2000, play a wide variety of traditional and contemporary acoustic music. They're noted for their homegrown harmonies and humorous lyrics. With five albums between them, Smythe & Taylor demonstrate their musical and songwriting abilities that range from lighthearted to poignant. Both are members of HAAM and Houston Fort Bend Songwriters Association, of which Gary is the current president.

I like to remind myself that it's okay to be a turkey, because we're all turkeys, ...sometimes.
Have an abundant and happy Thanksgiving and may all your giblets be generous and joyous with jubilation gravy.

Hank Woji Band
This Jersey born singer songwriter has quietly been building a strong catalog of work and an avid following since his move from Manhattan to Houston. Hank's music draws comparisons to Arlo Guthrie and Cat Stevens. He was recently a finalist in the 2007 South Florida Folk Festival Songwriting Contest and the Suwannee Springfest 2007 Songwriting Competition. His first CD, Medallion, released in 2005, combined elements of folk, blues, and rock with Brasilian, Cuban, African and Indian rhythms. For his work on Medallion, Hank was nominated for the 2006 Producer of the Year Award, by the Academy of Texas Music. His next album is currently in production.
Joining Hank onstage are Kelly Dean on saxophones, Jeff Duncan on violin, Mike Mizma on drums and percussion, Thomas Helton on doublebass, and Mark Zeus on mandolin.

Ben Morris and The Great American Box Car Chorus
“I have always tried to live my life with a whole lot of heart and plenty of soul.”
Throughout his music inner thoughts and raw emotions are shared with the exactness and bare bones honesty of a personal journal, with a passionate nod to story-tellers like Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson.
Live performance began early on for Ben, and found it’s musical debut in a duo out of Texas A&M University called Jeff and Ben (JAB). Their first written song, “We Don’t Wear No Underwear On Our Foreheads”, was an instant hit on the living room scene and sofa circuit. In a short time, this budding Texas performer has already been privileged to share the stage with Hayes Carll, Mark David Manders, Eli Young Band, Pauline Reese, Phil Pritchett, Deryl Dodd, and many other fine Texas artists.
“If ya’ll don’t love this band … something is wrong with your genetics.”
~ Mark David Manders
With a new sound and a new record, Ben Morris is stepping forward. The Other Side of Broken exposes melancholy realities while inspiring hope for the future and a confidence that the human spirit is rebounding and unsinkable.
“To me, life is so much richer when you live from the inside out.”
On this very special night the band Ben will be joined by his band The Boxcar Chorus. (I love that name.) Band members are Coby Tate flying across the frets as lead guitarist, Jon Dittfurth playing bass guitar and singing background vocals and Bucky Bachmeyer hitting the sticks as the drummer.
With all this young, fresh talent and energy, this night will be a lot of fun!! I am looking forward to this show, hope you can join us!

KILTY's Cheese Challenge
Bring your favorite cheese to share
.
Crackers and fruit will be provided.
Cheese chompin' starts @ 5:00 pm

The Kilty's Cheese Challenge was a super-colossal success!  It was a chunk o' cheese heaven!  The cheese themed decorated buffet was adorned with 20 different mouth-watering cheeses from around the world.  The selection included mild to very sharp, soft to hard, very young cheese to very old cheese covered with ashes, pungent-smelling cheese and the mold-bearing varieties.  Oh how cows and goats would have beamed at the creations made from their milks that celebrated their curds and whey!  To enhance our cheese experience, there were crackers, olives and fruits.  "Cheese aficionados" munched away in a marathon cheese tasting for several hours.  Beer as a partner to cheese makes a most harmonious marriage as the beer cleanses the palate between each cheese flavor.
If you missed it this time...there will be another one!  Thanks to all who brought a cheese to share!

The Reverend Dr. Otis Futhermucker and the Blues Pigs
Born in England in the age of dinosaurs The Reverend Otis Futhermucker began singing and playing guitar and harmonica at age 14. Through the early 1960s he opened for some of the big names on the British Blues circuit including the Graham Bond Organization with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, John Mayall in his Eric Clapton and Peter Green period, Alexis Korner, and also Little Walter, Lightnin' Slim, and Champion Jack Dupree during their European tours. First single released in 1964 "Buzz with the Fuzz" with King Cobra and the Rattlesnakes was the only record ever banned by Radio Caroline, the first of the British offshore pirate radio stations.
A six-year stint in Australia found him playing in various jazz bands in both the New Orleans and "Lounge-Lizard" styles until lack of money, greed and lust drove him to move to the USA in 1981.
Otis has musical influences going back to Mose Allison, J.B. Lenoir, Ray Charles, Lightning Hopkins, Brownie McGee and Sonny Terry, Duster Bennett, and the Bonzo Dog Doodah Band. Recently he has been getting more stage time around Houston. His playing and singing styles have been respectively described as "primitive" and "Nina Simone on helium after a ground-glass sandwich". His repertoire centers on old jazz of the 1920s and '30s and the blues classics after the Robert Johnson period. The Reverend has one CD recorded at Rabid Ape Studios in Houston, and has plans for a second one.
Joining Otis on stage tonight are Willie B on guitar, Leash on saxophone and Jeff Hoofard on percussion.
