Texas singer/songwriter Shad
Blair was born and raised on a cattle ranch
southeast of Post, Texas, learning to play guitar
and sing from his dad and older brothers. He wore
out his parents' old country vinyl, spending the
long Texas summers soaking up the music of Merle
Haggard, Gene Watson, Johnny Cash, Bobby Helms,
and Hank Williams. At age 14, Shad's father taught
him to play "Fraulein" and soon after
he began playing gigs, later working in the oilfields
to put himself through college. Over the years,
Shad has created a sound hardened by life experience
and steeped in his influences including Willie Nelson,
Townes Van Zandt, and Steve Earle, to name a few.

Westbound is a kicked-up,
energetic, acoustic duo from Houston, Texas featuring
Rebecca Ferguson on lead vocals and John Stoll on
acoustic guitar, backing vocals and stomp-box percussion.
Together they present listeners with soft, sweet
jazzy songs, greasy blues, classic rock, Americana,
and outlaw country, all in a great mix of crowd
pleasers ranging from classic to modern, including
a variety of less-often heard compositions.
Originally trained in classical
and choral singing, Rebecca strayed from that path
and began finding her true voice in blues, Americana
and jazz. From there she developed a love of songwriting,
fascinated by the endless potential a song has to
tell a story or share a moment. Rebecca holds the
audience captive with a versatile voice suited for
everything from raunchy blues to sweet serenades.
John has found his voice beside
Rebecca. For 17 years, he has played different instruments
in rock bands all over Texas, and is defined by
the music he plays. John approaches music with a
fire and a passion matched by nothing else in his
life, so much so that he regularly and happily loses
both sleep and guitar strings in the quest to take
the music higher.
The duo is currently writing
and recording their debut album, Blackjack Road.
Whether playing originals or covers, Westbound has
its own voice, and always brings a ton of energy
and fun to the stage!

Texas Songwriter Showcase
Some of the best singer
songwriters from around the state of Texas grace
the JPHH stage on the second Friday of each month.
The featured artists for this evening's showcase
is Carrie
Elkin.
 |
Carrie Elkin: A troubadour
in the most classic fashion, Elkin has ridden
a Gypsy breeze of serendipity for the last ten
years, landing for a time in Cleveland, Athens,
Taos, Steamboat Springs, Colorado Springs and
Boston, finally coming to settle in Austin, TX
in the summer of 2007. Its exactly this
sort of openness to the people and places that
pass through her life, and to the opportunities
that might emerge in every new and particular
circumstance, that grew to become the very process
by which Elkin somehow managed to find herself
in the midst of some of Austins finest musicians
and producers, literally, within days of arriving
in town. While already making quite a buzz around
the Austin scene with her highly spirited and
spontaneous performances, Elkin spends the majority
of her time on the road still, touring nationally
and in the UK and Europe.

Willie B: Willie
describes himself as a bluesy guitar player, but
he is so much more. He is a gifted and diverse
guitar player who writes and performs in many
musical genres. Willie writes and sings songs
around the people in his life. He has been a past
recipient of HFBSA's "Song of the Year"
and "Songwriter of the Year". Willie
has recorded four albums to date and is currently
working on his fifth solo project.
The Texas Songwriters' Showcase
is the longest running showcase in Houston. These
songwriters will take to the stage to entertain
you with colossal musical talent and wide-ranging
experience ... you will not be disappointed.
