Across
the Water
True
to their name, Across The Water features
an all-acoustic repertoire from both sides of
the Atlantic - just like the players. Steve Goodchild
hails from the north of England, and Bob Lahmeyer
and Paul Cooper are natives, respectively, of
Missouri and Texas. Despite diverse geographic
roots, they share some key things in common.
|
Across
the Water |
"I
think we all hooked into folk music early, and
started playing and singing when we were teenagers,"
says Paul, who remembers performing "Where
Have All the Flowers Gone" for his high school
assembly in the 1960s; Steve's father had to drive
him to gigs when he started performing in folk
clubs at fifteen, and Bob recalls his college
band "practicing Crosby, Stills, Nash and
Young numbers a capella for hours on road
trips until we had it nailed!"
When
ATW comes to play, they show up with a lot of
instruments. All three play guitar. Bob can pick
a hard-as-nails bluegrass banjo on one number,
and then turn a deft hand to the bass on the next
one. Paul plays backup and solo mandolin, and
has recently been seen behind more exotic things
like bouzoukis and octave mandolins, holding Steve
totally accountable for his new fascination for
things with more than six strings! Depending on
the performance, Steve might come out toting a
mandolin, mandola, a cittern or even the mandocello
he calls "Bloodaxe". Stir three capable
voices into the instrumental mix and you have
all the ingredients for a veritable smorgasbord
of new and traditional music from their respective
countries and regions. They have also been known
to put aside the wood & wire and, without
the benefit of that safety-net, deliver the occasional
unaccompanied number in distinctive tight, three-part
harmony.

Matt Harlan with Grant Dawson and Jimmy Pizzitola.
Matt
Harlan: A songwriter's songwriter, composing scenic
landscapes and pointed statements disguised as
songs ... often non-linear, but always melodic.
Matt took First Place in the 2006 American Songwriter
Lyric Contest for his song "Waiting For Godot."
His debut CD, Live and Rambling, will be available at the show.
Grant Dawson: Details on this performer are coming soon.
Jimmy Pizzitola:
His songs are simple. His voice is pure. He believes in the songs he sings and takes the listener with him wherever he chooses to go. Jimmy’s voice is one that appeals to both the old standards (people, that is) and the new editions. Worldly-aware and introspective, his songs seem to tap into the collective consciousness of our time – which explains his ever-expanding fan base.

Clepper George
Jimmy George and Russell Clepper, both long time residents of Austin, have been performing together since the spring of 2005, releasing three independent CD’s including their latest, Broken Sand Dollars.
“I started playing the guitar and writing songs while I was a student at Tech.’ says Clepper. “Not because I didn’t have anything else to do. It was just something I was born |
|
|
to and Lubbock had the scene and the scenery that inspired me to go for it.” His songwriting style grew from an early love of folk, bluegrass and gospel, and later drew from songwriters such as John Prine, Butch Hancock, Joe Ely and Billy Joe Shaver. He first performed his original music in Lubbock as a member of a folk/rock trio that included local songwriter, hobo hero and cowboy, Eddie Beethoven.
 |
George developed his own sound, taking inspiration from the likes of Robert Fripp, Adrian Ballew, Jeff Beck plus other progressive and experimental rockers, as well as songwriters such as Leonard Cohen and Bruce Coburn. The years since have seen him take up the acoustic guitar and open for acts like Santana, the California Guitar Trio and Tom Petty. In Austin, he has a long series of notches in his music belt, including a stint with the Asylum Street Spankers and Weird Cousin. Currently, he is one of the top session players at Lava Studios and just finished doing some of the recording and most of the mastering in his own studio for David Rodriguez’ latest effort, Constant War.
The duo Clepper George brings these widely divergent musical backgrounds together to forge a unique, powerful, new acoustic sound that features rich guitar tapestries and tight vocal harmonies.
Norm Ballinger will provide an opening set for tonight's entertainment.

Twilight Hotel

Hailing from the fertile music scene of Winnipeg, MB, Brandy Zdan & Dave Quanbury met in 2002 at the Trout Forest Music Festival in Ontario. The sparks flew in a fever, and |
|
|
they realized the power of combining their talents. Twilight Hotel have been compared to memorable folk duos because they radiate that certain elusive chemistry that can only come from two people in love singing together. Couples that make music together rarely find harmony in their relationships; Zdan and Quanbury are hoping to buck the trend with their personal and musical partnership in Twilight Hotel.
Constant touring in the U.S. and Canada continue to bolster the duo's profile. In 2006/2007 they played over 200 North American tour dates and showcased at the 2007 North American Folk Alliance as well as other regional showcases in the U.S. and Canada. Nominated for the Emerging Artist Award, the band played the 2008 Folk Alliance Awards show a few weeks ago in Memphis.
Following their Houston debut at JPHH, you can catch the duo on the first weekend of the Kerrville Folk Festival.
Twilight Hotel has teamed up with producer Colin Linden to record, Highway Prayer, the follow up album to their critically acclaimed 2006 release Bethune (nominated Best Americana Album at the 2007 American Independent Music Awards). Highway Prayer continues the duo’s provocative love story showcasing their characteristic dark twang and noir cabaret all the while centered around their rich vocal harmonies.
"Twilight Hotel, a most winning pair. Dave and Brandy are not only musically talented and engaging, but they are innovative, fresh and original. They somehow manage to blend a Parisian cabaret sound, vintage rock, country and their original style into one cohesive, highly entertaining sound. I doubt they'll be playing small clubs much longer." ~ Rich Warren, WFMT Chicago
Twilight Hotel is the hottest couple to join musical voices in years. The aptly titled band of two presents dark, road songs that sizzle on and seduce off stage. Two guitars or a guitar accompanied by accordion, two rich vocals, two composer-lyricists: Twilight Hotel fills a whole band's bill with only two members.
