Butch
Morgan
and Steve Brooks
Never
let it be said the Claude "Butch" Morgan isn't passionate about life. His songs are often
spiritual in nature, but they're full of fun and
carry simple but powerful messages.
Butch
Morgan has an ability to take life's simplicity
and put a striking message inside in the form
of a song, a great example being his "God
Drives A Pick-up Truck". Morgan's "Blubberball"
attests to all that can go wrong when you don't
take care of yourself, and is a song performed
entirely with one chord. As Butch says, "It
starts off in G, then goes to G for the solos,
then we wrap it up in G."
Cross
two famous guys named Brooks - Garth and Mel -
and you get Austin folksinger Steve Brooks.
He's got a song for every occasion, from the sublime
to the ridiculous and back. His tunes range from
comic commentary and crackerbarrel philosophy
to lyrical love ballads and sharp-edged snapshots
of Texas and the world.
Best-known for writing a song-a-week for Jim Hightower's
radio show, Steve's work has been recorded by
artists like Kevin So, Emily Kaitz and Slaid Cleaves,
who calls him, "A great unsung songwriter
of Austin." He's had music in two films and
appeared in two more, including the 2004 release
"Barbecue: A Texas Love Story."
Don't miss this show ... two wonderful character with a humorous rapport onstage. You'll laugh for sure!

The Hanshaws
CD Release Party
It's been a "few" years since David and Kelly Hanshaw hit the road and fronted bands in various dancehalls and nightclubs throughout the southwest. They
are now an acoustic duo performing as The Hanshaws.
Their years of performing together have perfected
an amazingly tuneful unison; David and Kelly's
harmonies are absolutely incredible!
The Hanshaws' self-titled studio CD project is finally here. This night will be different because the duo will be performing the songs from their new CD with a band! Afterwards, they plan on doing some good ole' jammin' and harmonizin'. So bring your best voice!
The evening will include CD and T-Shirt give-a-ways as well as complimentary food. You heard it, it's lasagna and all the fixins from the Lasagna House!!! (YUM!)
David and Kelly's good friends Willie B and Otis Futhermucker, joined by a top-notch rhythm section, will start the night off with some great music.
Just bring your party animal self. There will, of course, be plenty of CD's for sale, plus a very limited supply of T-Shirts for sale to commemorate the event.
Now really, could you not have a great time!
Don't be late.... you might miss something!

Texas Songwriter Showcase
Some of the best singer songwriters from around
the state of Texas grace the JPHH stage on the
second Friday of each month.
The
featured artists for this evening's showcase are Gary Seber , Patti Gyer and Mike Pope.
Gary
Seber: When you first hear Gary play, you
may find it impossible to believe that you're
hearing just one musician! He has studied the "acoustic
percussive fingerstyle" of Preston Reed with it's two-handed fretboard
attack. Gary's debut CD, entitled Candle Power, features
the highly innovative but little-known technique
of playing the neck of an open-tuned guitar, coaxing
an amazing abundance of sound from the solo instrument.
Patti Gyer -
Patti grew up writing poetry, naturally transitioned to lyrics, then picked up the guitar to satisfy the melodies playing in her head. She released her first collection of poetry, “ Skipping Stones” in October 2007 and has continually received rave reviews for her work. Her current CD project is planned for release at the end of the year. Patti's original songs can make you laugh, and in an instant have you crying.
Michael
Pope: Co-founder and co-host of this showcase,
Michael has been writing songs for a few years
now. Many of his original's are open tuned, 5
finger picking, folk jazz instrumentals, but his
lyrics are strong and reflect his life's experiences.
Michael has one CD to his credit so far.
Willie
B: Willie describes himself as a bluesy guitar
player, but he is so much more. He is a gifted
and diverse guitar player who writes and performs
in many musical genres. Willie writes and sings
songs around the people in his life. He has been
a past recipient of HFBSA's "Song
of the Year" and "Songwriter of the
Year". Willie has recorded four albums to
date and is currently working on his fifth solo
project.
The Texas
Songwriters' Showcase
is
the
longest running
showcase in Houston. These songwriters will take
to the stage to entertain you with colossal musical
talent
and
wide-ranging
experience ... you
will not be disappointed.

Sweet
Mama Cotton and the Sugar Daddies
Tonight
we again welcome to our stage ~ musician
~ singer ~ songwriter ~ comedienne ~ Marcy Rae,
alias Sweet Mama Cotton. Some of Marcys
material is parody; she combines her blues
talent with comedy in her performances.
The artistic line up this evening consists of Sweet Mama Cotton
contributing
keys, vocals and vibes to the mix, Charles “Neckbone” |
|
Murphy on bass and vocals, Alan Lee
adding guitar and vocals, drums by Scooter Green, and percussion from Jeff Hoofard. Together they are
the Sugar Daddies
and they
do pitch a wang dang doodle!
Marcys
musical interests are diverse, but all these
influences have combined to produce a musical
approach that is inclusive of all
forms of music. Her blues repertoire includes
standards such as Stormy Monday
and Down Home Blues, as well as
classics from the jazz/blues era of Bessie Smith
and Sippie Wallace. She also rocks out on Chuck
Berry style tunes and some funky dance tunes
like Shaky Ground. Her diverse background
has expanded her repertoire to include classic
standards, folk, rock, and country music as
well as blues. Mixed in with the wide variety
of cover material is a healthy dose of her original
music.
Since
her professional debut as a musician, she has
played on bills with Ray Campi and the Rebels,
Jackson Browne, The Blasters, Blood Sweat and
Tears, and Rose Maddox. Marcy also spent some
time as keyboard player for The Drifters on
a tour through the South.
While
living in Houston, Marcy has shared the stage
with many of the Blues Legends of Texas, including
Pete Mayes, Texas Johnny Brown, Trudy Lynn,
Lavelle White, Jimmy T-99 Nelson,
Oscar Perry, Clarence Holliman, Carol Fran,
Earl Gilliam, Grady Gaines, Trudy Lynn, Carolyn
Blanchard, and Mark May. She has also been invited
to perform with Bob Margolin and Pinetop Perkins
on several occasions, and at the all-star jam
band at the W.C. Handy Awards.
Marcy
Rae, aka Sweet Mama Cotton, presents a confident
statement of affirming blues. As her motto
states, Marcy plays new Texas blues with
respect for tradition.
