Jason Weems
& Jason Freed

This is one of the most amazing song writing duos in Austin, TX, known as Better Day Maybe. Jason Freed & Jason Weems have been best friends and writing partners for 8 years playing wonderful original tunes together as well in their solo careers. This is a must see to believe experience guaranteed to get even the most respectable day-shifters and wall flowers out of their shells and back into life! Think of it as a musical cure all for what ever bores you!

Jason Weems, a Regional Finalist in the 2006 Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Songwriters Competition, has been writing and performing his original songs since 1995. He honed his stage presence and skill as a singer songwriter in his hometown of Wichita Falls before moving on to Denton, where he began touring the extensive Texas college circuit. Through the years Jason has enjoyed the great fortune of having played with some great local, regional, and national acts such as Bowling For Soup, Ian Moore, Will Sexton, porterdavis, and so many more.
Jason is actively performing throughout the great state of Texas while finishing his latest album, to be titled Dream Without Sleep. It is being recorded at the world famous Congress House Studio in Austin. He has previously released several CD's.
Jason also volunteers at the Kerrville Folk Festival where he works as the stage manager for the festival's main stage performances.
Jason Freed is a long time singer/songwriter who has lived all over the world. He contributes tasteful guitar licks and vocal harmonies to create a uniqueness all their own. He is the producer and an on-air personality on one of Austin's top rated morning radio shows on Majic 95.5FM.
I know you'll love the combo.

The O'Byrnes
The O'Byrnes is a unique family band. Everyone contributes something musically individual and unsuppressed - the result is a genre-bending collection of original music and eclectic covers ...
The O'Byrnes music has tied this family together from the beginning. Mike and Terry always made sure that musical instruments were left conveniently laying around the house to be picked up and played by their children. As the kids grew older and started playing and singing, they decided to leave the living room and start making serious music together.
They spent 2005 touring the US, playing many of the country's great live music venues, including the main stage of the Philly Folk Festival, The Birchmere, Jorma's Fur Peace Ranch, Mass MOCA, The Keswick Theater, The Count Basie Theater, the IMAC in Long Island, The Rams Head, and the Belcourt Theater in Nashville. In January of 2006 the family pulled up stakes and relocated to Houston, opting to make the famous Texas music community their home base, and officially formed The O'Byrnes. Their debut CD, Now and Then was released May 15, 2006. They are currently performing in support of the CD.

Pam's Rodeo Saga
Last night my friend and I went to the bowlegged H festival as citified cowgirls! Citified means you are on the sharp lookout for cow patties to avoid! We squeezed into our western duds, draped our shoulders with
fringe, adorned ours neck and ears with sparkly and shiny silver hangy-down jewelry and headed for the wide open spaces of Reliant Park!
We were shuttled from the parking lot to the main gate on the bucking bronco, aiming for every pot hole on the worm-like people mover. I couldn't help but notice that the tram announcer had obviously been to Disneyland ... same talk but with cowboy hype! One of the first thing that catches your eye is the Methodist Training Center! Not exactly sure what goes on inside that big white bubble but we kept our distance!
Our first mission was food ... what were we thinking ... our jeans were tight enough! We perused the food selection from one chuck wagon to the next. I selected a down home on the range food that I'm sure every cowboy ate after a hard day of cattle wrangling - pineapple habanero glazed shrimp on a stick! I know I would request it if I were a real cowgirl! Well, those 6 little shrimp didn't make my jeans any tighter, so I was back on the hunt for something else to eat! I just had to get my all-time favorite rodeo food - an ear of roasted corn (no stick)!
We then waddled over to Reliant Center to shop the aisles of inflated priced boots, hats, clothes, purses, jewelry, furniture, packaged food, and anything you can image made from cow fur! Trying on boots was a side-splitting, roll on the floor hilarious experience ... remember our tight fitting jeans! The sales people probably thought we were having way too much fun. Hats and purses were safer to try on no bending over trying to touch our feet, but not as funny either. That leather smell is what makes me whip out the credit card and buy things I only wear one season of the year ... rodeo season!
Our shopping expedition came to an end when we realized it was time for music! We made it to Reliant Stadium in time to hear that deep sexy voice of Josh Turner!
Following the concert we made our exit with the herd and headed to the midway to check out the carnival food (we didn't want to miss anything). Lots of the usual stuff on a stick, but the big attraction with the longest lines was the "pink" concession ... nothing but pure caloric deep fried foods. They had Twinkies (tried these a couple years ago), Snickers, Oreos, cheesecake, cheese, cookie dough, Coke and Dr. Pepper (I'm probably missing a couple food groups in this list), but all were deep fried and most on a stick..
Being a Dr Pepper lover, I was drawn in immediately with great curiosity. As I stood in line, I carefully listened to what everyone ahead of me was ordering to clog their arteries and in that short survey, the Twinkies were the most popular. At the window, I bravely told the young boy
at the window with the powdered sugar shaker still in his hand, that I would like the deep fried Dr. Pepper. Without a smile he stuffed deep fried crumblies into a paper cup (you know, the little strings of batter left in the fryer), squeezed a generous amount of dark liquid over the top and dusted with powdered sugar. Not that good, better toward the bottom of the cup, but I know I will stick to my DP in liquid form from now on.
If you feel guilty after even standing in line at this booth, then trot next door and order up a "healthy salad" as advertised on their sign board! Really don't think a healthy salad in on anyone's rodeo food list to try!
We did have alot of fun and will do it all over again next year. Yee-haw!

Texas Songwriter Showcase
Some of the best singer songwriters from around the state of Texas grace the JPHH stage on
the second Friday of each month. The featured artists for this evening's showcase are Andy and Al of andi and i.
andi and i: Funked-up folk from Chicago. Andi and Al Tauber create an unusual variety of textures with two voices, a guitar, and occasional percussion, infusing their songs with the folk elements of storytelling, human experience, faith, and humor. They have recorded two CDs, Days Like This (1996) and Harder (2003), taken part in a benefit CD, Redemption, and are featured on the compilation CD So Far. This duo was voted "Second Best Gas Station Band" by Fuel and Fun Magazine. Their music may cause mild periodontal inflammation in pregnant women 65 or older.
Jeff Hoofard: Jeff has been playing drums for local and national acts since 1986 sharing the stage with such icons as Bo Diddley and Chubby Checker as well as some of Texas’ best acoustic artists. He has been the percussionist of choice on several recording projects and is currently playing with Willie B & The Silverbacks. Jeff is our "house" percussionist.
Willie B: Willie describes himself as a bluesy guitar player, but he is so much more. He is a gifted and diverse guitar player who writes and performs in many musical genres. Willie writes and sings songs around the people in his life. He has been a past recipient of HFBSA's "Song of the Year" and "Songwriter of the Year". Willie has recorded four albums to date and is currently working on his fifth solo project.
The Texas Songwriters' Showcase is the longest running showcase in Houston. These songwriters will take to the stage to entertain you with colossal musical talent and wide-ranging experience ... you will not be disappointed.

ilyAMIY
As a duo, rob hinkal and Heather Lloyd have been wandering the country since September 1st of 2003, living off of paper cuts and string cuts and their artwork and music. They survive on luck on fumes on spit on Love. ilyAIMY is a high-energy show, with percussive acoustic performances featuring award-winning songwriting and signature male/female harmonies.
rob - vocals, acoustic guitar, baritone guitar, bass.
rob is the progenitor and leader of the band, the scowly growly
member of ilyAIMY. He has been accused of pulling harmonics out of his guitar while simultaneously raping it. Having started as a bass player, rob incorporated slap-bass and Primus-esque strumming techniques into an unorthodox guitar style, later augmented by the Appalachian clawhammer banjo styling he learned from Tinsmith's renowned banjo player, Brooke Parkhurst.
Heather - vocals, acoustic guitar, bass, djembe.
Heather "Danger" Lloyd, is co-front to the band. A vocal chameleon, her strength is providing the force, grit, softness or sweetness a song calls for. With a love of R&B, chamber choir, slam poetry and non-fiction, Heather has also become an award-winning songwriter and performer. She can rap and strum and drum and rip through the emotions that comprise the undertone of all of ilyAIMY's music. She has also found objects and makes jewelry out of her roadside finds as well as all her weary instrument parts. She is also a hobbyist performance poet.

“A bone-rattling acoustic act... with driving lyrical force, then male/female harmonies that lock in, lift, drop and pull ... And then they slow it down and rip you open.” ~ On Tap Magazine
Joe Kowan will be performing an opening set tonight.

Dana Cooper

Americana legend Dana Cooper has wowed crowds throughout the U.S. and Europe recently, with tunes from his newest album, Made of Mud on King Easy Records. William Michael Smith of The Houston Press wrote, “The album rumbles with plenty of roots-rock swagger… As a songwriter, Cooper shows he's paid attention during his 30 years of trial-and-error authorship. On Made of Mud, he repeatedly demonstrates personal warmth, intellectual vigor and a Zen grasp of imagery, metaphor, story line and poetics". Dana's highly original lyrics, skillful guitar work, evocative vocals and stage humor have earned him a devoted following with fans and critics alike. Cooper's songs have been recorded by artists such as Maura O'Connell, Jonell Mosser, Susan Werner, Jen Cohen, Christine Albert, Trout Fishing in America, Pierce Pettis, Johnsmith and Shake Russell.
We are always extremely pleased to be able to present Dana and his music. It's always a special evening ... don't miss it.

Sweet Mama Cotton
Last December we introduced you to musician ~ singer ~ songwriter ~ comedienne Marcy Rae, alias Sweet Mama Cotton. Tonight we hope you will join us in again welcoming her to the JPHH stage, this time around accompanied by percussionist extraordinaire, Jeff Hoofard. Some of Marcy’s material is parody; she combines her blues talent with comedy in her performances.
Marcy’s musical interests are diverse, but all these influences have combined to produce a musical approach that is inclusive of all forms of music. Her blues repertoire includes standards such as “Stormy Monday” and “Down Home Blues”, as well as classics from the jazz/blues era of Bessie Smith and Sippie Wallace. She also rocks out on Chuck Berry style tunes and some funky dance tunes like “Shaky Ground”. Her diverse background has expanded her repertoire to include classic standards, folk, rock, and country music as well as blues. Mixed in with the wide variety of cover material is a healthy dose of her original music.
Since her professional debut as a musician, she has played on bills with Ray Campi and the Rebels, Jackson Browne, The Blasters, Blood Sweat and Tears, and Rose Maddox. Marcy also spent some time as keyboard player for The Drifters on a tour through the South.
While living in Houston, Marcy has shared the stage with many of the Blues Legends of Texas, including Pete Mayes, Texas Johnny Brown, Trudy Lynn, Lavelle White, Jimmy “T-99” Nelson, Oscar Perry, Clarence Holliman, Carol Fran, Earl Gilliam, Grady Gaines, Trudy Lynn, Carolyn Blanchard, and Mark May. She has also been invited to perform with Bob Margolin and Pinetop Perkins on several occasions, and at the all-star jam band at the W.C. Handy Awards.
Marcy Rae, aka Sweet Mama Cotton, presents a confident statement of affirming blues. As her “motto” states, Marcy plays “new Texas blues with respect for tradition”.

Carrie Ann and the Apocalyptics
The Apocalyptics were formed in July of 2004, and since then have had a great deal of fun making music. They have had the honor of opening up for legendary musicians like Billy Joe Shaver and have lent their time and talents to worthy causes like the Fifth Wards Progressive Amateur Boxing Association and the Houston Womens Center. This mix match conglomeration of ages
and body types includes some of Houston's most regarded players on instruments as diverse as guitar, bass, violin, percussion, accordion, dobro, and mandolin.
Carrie Ann Buchanan is one of Houston's premiere singer songwriters. Her eclectic style is a mixture of influences from Paul Simon to Carole King ... from Ani DeFranco to Dolly Parton ... with a hint of Ozzy Osborne. Carrie Ann contributes most of the group's song writing, in addition to being an accomplished guitar player. Her style reflects her varied influences ... growing up in the mid-west, learning to play music in church, being married to Houston's own roots rocker Opie Hendrix, being a mother. Her songwriting is honest and compelling and her melodies will wrap themselves up in your head so you'll be singing them for days after catching a performance.

"The Apocalyptics' material is a delicate blend of country, folk and Celtic rhythms. It's anchored by thoughtful songwriting and unforced, sincere vocals." ~ Joey Guerra, Houston Chronicle
Its hard to pin a style on this group or Buchanan's writing, but eclectic and truthful come to mind. The cover songs they do are interesting and unexpected, everything from Black Sabbath to Leonard Cohen, Black Oak Arkansas to Dolly Parton. Jimb and Susan Jackson are current members of Houston's Beans Barton and the Bi-Peds and they bring a wealth of creativity, experience and knowledge to the group. Jimb Jackson is one of those rare gems in the music world, amazingly talented and yet modest and subtle. Susan Jackson plays a myriad of instruments during the course of a show and is an amazing music teacher who has been voted as Houston's Best Accordion Teacher. Gary Clark is a member of the recently rejuvenated Lipps and the Trips. His haunting dobro is a perfect flavor to compliment this band's unique sound.

Marvin "Speed Limit" Gershowitz
Speed Limit, also known as Marvin Gershowitz, is a self-taught, twenty-year veteran of the Austin music scene, who now makes his home in Oregon. Marvin has long sought to find that certain something, that creative difference to contribute to the music and poetry of this world. His musical roots may have sprouted from the
1960's and 1970's, but his limbs reach for the sky. The man's taste in music is as diverse as a copy of Billboard Magazine's list of genres. His vocals, or anti-vocals, reveal warmth from the chaos and bring to mind every possible vocal styling ... some defying classification.
As Marvin puts it, "Just because I don't understand a kind of music, only means I don't understand. I believe there is a musician doing something great in every musical genre, even if I haven't yet figured it out."
Or as Lyric LaCeile of Unsigned Magazine in the U.K. put it, "[Marvin's] one HELLUVA songwriter, arranger, player. Why its as if R.L. Burnside mixed some genes with Eric Clapton and Otis Redding, who then mixed more genes with Patti Smith and Tamra Spivey and you were born! My oh my!"
Life without subjectivity is boring and Speed Limit challenges you to make your own mind up … each and every individual, one at a time! Come on out tonight and take that challenge!
