Jon
Michaels

NASHVILLE'S HIDDEN GEM
Writers In The Round with Willie B & Otis Futhermucker
The prodigal songwriter, Jon Michaels makes his return to the JP Hops House stage after a "way too long" hiatus. On his last visit he celebrated the release of his second album, I Am Who I Am. Tonight Jon returns with songs from his newest album, I Hear A Clock, which was released earlier this year.
In
a time when most people just talk about their
feelings, Jon Michaels is a breath of fresh
air, a rare singer/songwriter who willingly
opens his heart and bares his soul. In his
strong, smooth baritone, Jon croons with masterful
vocal inflections of truth and beauty, tales
of forgiveness, love lost and love found,
taking his listeners on an emotional journey
in the way that is uniquely Jon Michaels.

"Jon
- I love your music! It's Chicken Soup for
my soul. Keep up the good work spreading love,
light, joy and fun."
~ Jack Canfield (Co-Author
Chicken Soup For The Soul)

“In a land full of `same ol’, same ol,’ it’s so good to know Jon stays the course for being a little bit different. I love his songs.” ~ Jeffrey Steele, the writer of over 45 Top 5 Country singles, is one of Jon’s biggest fans. |
Also to his credit, Jon appears as the musical influence on two television cooking programs, "Christina Cooks” (PBS) and “Christina Cooks Live at Whole Foods Market” (Comcast Network) which stars the feisty Philadelphia TV show hostess named Christina Pirello.
Jon is scheduled to perform on the main stage at the Kerrville Folk Festival this year on Friday, June 6.
Joining Jon onstage this evening will be two of JPHH's regular performers, Willie B and Otis Futhermucker. The 'writers in the round' format always proves to be a favortie with the artists as well as the auduence.
Willie B describes himself as a bluesy guitar
player, but he is so much more. He is a gifted
and diverse guitar player who writes and performs
in many musical genres. Willie writes and sings
songs around the people in his life. He has been
a past recipient of HFBSA's "Song
of the Year" and "Songwriter of the
Year". Willie has recorded four albums to
date and is currently working on his fifth solo
project.
Fans of the singer/songwriter genre can catch
Willie in action each month
as he hosts the Texas
Songwriters' Showcase at JP Hops House,
the
longest running
showcase in Houston.

Otis, born in England in the age of dinosaurs, began singing and playing guitar and harmonica at age 14, and through the early 1960s he opened for some of the big names on the British Blues circuit. "Buzz with the Fuzz" with King Cobra and the Rattlesnakes, his first single released in 1964, was the only record ever banned by Radio Caroline, the first of the British offshore pirate radio stations.
His playing and singing styles have been respectively described as "primitive" and "Nina Simone on helium after a ground-glass sandwich". His repertoire centers on old jazz of the 1920s and '30s and the blues classics after the Robert Johnson period. Otis has two CDs thus far to his credit.

Texas Songwriter Showcase
Some of the best singer songwriters from around the state of Texas grace the JPHH stage on the second Friday of each month. The featured artists for this evening's showcase are Brian Kalinec and Jeff Chambers.
Brian Kalinec: A talented singer, songwriter and guitarist, Brian performs original music and cover tunes. His lead guitar licks will leave you spellbound. Brian was selected as an 'Artist of Note' by SingOut Magazine in the winter 2007 issue. He won first place in the 1st Annual Texas Songwriter’s Serenade songwriting contest at Fiddler’s Frolics in Hallettsville, TX. His music has also been featured on ABC's World News Now. Brian released his debut CD, Last Man Standing, in early 2007.
Jeff Chambers: An old Houston barroom hackjammer from way back, Jeff played guitar for The Gentrys in high school, often splitting shows with Roy Head and the Traits, he moonlighted on off nights as bassist with Bill Gibbons and the Coachmen, and in the 70's worked as guitarist and singer with Bert Young and the Country Express, as well as J.C. and the Moonshine Band, at country & western dances, trail rides, beer joints and rodeo gigs.
Jeff does not consider himself a songwriter, having penned only about 30 songs in as many years. Half of these embody reflections on war, are somewhat objectionable and are not considered material for public consumption. The other half contain no references to war, are somewhat objectionable and are not considered material for public consumption. YEAH!
Willie
B: Willie describes himself as a bluesy guitar
player, but he is so much more. He is a gifted

Ben
Morris and The Great American Box Car Chorus
I have always tried to live my life with
a whole lot of heart and plenty of soul.
Throughout
his music inner thoughts and raw emotions are
shared with the exactness and bare bones honesty
of a personal journal, with a passionate nod to
story-tellers like Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. |
|
Live
performance began early on for Ben, and found
its musical debut in a duo out of Texas
A&M University called Jeff and Ben (JAB).
Their first written song, We Dont
Wear No Underwear On Our Foreheads, was
an instant hit on the living room scene and sofa
circuit. In a short time,
this budding Texas performer has already been
privileged to share the stage with Hayes Carll,
Mark David Manders, Eli Young Band, Pauline Reese,
Phil Pritchett, Deryl Dodd, and many other fine
Texas artists.
If
yall dont love this band
something
is wrong with your genetics.
~ Mark David Manders
With a new sound and a new record, Ben Morris
is stepping forward. The Other Side of Broken exposes melancholy realities while inspiring hope
for the future and a confidence that the human
spirit is rebounding and unsinkable.
To me, life is so much richer when you live
from the inside out.
On
this very special night the band Ben will be joined
by his band The Boxcar Chorus. (I love that name.)
Band members are Coby Tate flying across the frets
as lead guitarist, Jon Dittfurth playing bass
guitar and singing background vocals and Bucky
Bachmeyer hitting the sticks as the drummer.
With all this young, fresh talent and energy,
this night will be a lot of fun!! I am looking
forward to this show, hope you can join us!

Sweet
Mama Cotton
Tonight
we again welcome to our stage ~ musician
~ singer ~ songwriter ~ comedienne ~ Marcy Rae,
alias Sweet Mama Cotton. Some of Marcys
material is parody; she combines her blues
talent with comedy in her performances.
Marcys
musical interests are diverse, but all these
influences have combined to produce a musical
approach that is inclusive of all |
|
forms of music. Her blues repertoire includes
standards such as Stormy Monday
and Down Home Blues, as well as
classics from the jazz/blues era of Bessie Smith
and Sippie Wallace. She also rocks out on Chuck
Berry style tunes and some funky dance tunes
like Shaky Ground. Her diverse background
has expanded her repertoire to include classic
standards, folk, rock, and country music as
well as blues. Mixed in with the wide variety
of cover material is a healthy dose of her original
music.
Since
her professional debut as a musician, she has
played on bills with Ray Campi and the Rebels,
Jackson Browne, The Blasters, Blood Sweat and
Tears, and Rose Maddox. Marcy also spent some
time as keyboard player for The Drifters on
a tour through the South.
While
living in Houston, Marcy has shared the stage
with many of the Blues Legends of Texas, including
Pete Mayes, Texas Johnny Brown, Trudy Lynn,
Lavelle White, Jimmy T-99 Nelson,
Oscar Perry, Clarence Holliman, Carol Fran,
Earl Gilliam, Grady Gaines, Trudy Lynn, Carolyn
Blanchard, and Mark May. She has also been invited
to perform with Bob Margolin and Pinetop Perkins
on several occasions, and at the all-star jam
band at the W.C. Handy Awards.
Marcy
Rae, aka Sweet Mama Cotton, presents a confident
statement of affirming blues. As her motto
states, Marcy plays new Texas blues with
respect for tradition.

Butch
Morgan, Karen Mal & Ken Gaines
Never
let it be said that Claude "Butch" Morgan isn't passionate about life. His songs are often
spiritual in nature, but they're full of fun and
carry simple but powerful messages.
Butch
Morgan has an ability to take life's simplicity
and put a striking message inside in the form
of a song, a great example being his "God
Drives A Pick-up Truck". Morgan's "Blubberball"
attests to all that can go wrong when you don't
take care of yourself, and is a song performed
entirely with one chord. As Butch says, "It
starts off in G, then goes to G for the solos,
then we wrap it up in G."
Based in Austin, TX, Karen Mal has created a name for herself as a captivating singer, instrumentalist and songwriter. Ranging from charming to seductive, impressionistic to philosophical, her songs have brought her nationwide acclaim. She's won top awards from the Wildflower Arts and Music Festival in Texas, the Tucson Folk Festival and the Portland Songwriters Association and has also been a three time New Folk Finalist at Kerrville, emerging artist at Falcon Ridge and a finalist at the Sisters Folk Festival.
 |
Houston area singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer Ken Gaines has the goal of writing great songs in just about every genre and style. You won't be able to put a finger on what he does from sweet lyrical ballads, to double entendre blues, to swingin' jazz, and redneck rock. Onstage Ken is both into the songs and the moment. "Live performance for me is the culmination of all my thinking and practice. It's like a religious experience. I want you to laugh and cry on the same night and I hope you go home feeling like you've fallen in love all over again with someone or something you hold very dear".
 |
Do NOT miss this show ... Butch's wonderful character and humorous rapport onstage will have you laughing for sure. With Karen you don't just get hot licks; you get melody, counterpoint, and a sense of rhythm that eases the whole sound deeper into the groove.
Ken brings vocal range, supple guitar work and lyrics which are both powerful and poetic, and highlight his skills as a story teller and observer of life.
