Texas Songwriter Showcase
Some of the best singer songwriters from around
the state of Texas grace the JPHH stage on the
second Friday of each month.
The
featured artists for this evening's showcase are
Chelsea Miller and Celeste Terrell.
Chelsea
Miller: "I
am a musician from the heart ... i grew up with
music in my life ... I play my own instruments
(piano and guitar) ... i sing my own lyrics and
harmonies ... I write my own songs... I have recorded
everything by myself or with Kenyon Saylor White
(until recently) ... (for the most part) i express
my emotions through music ... I am a musician
in every sense of the word ... and will always
be ..."
Celeste
Terrell : A transplanted transplant ... first
to Boston from Louisiana, followed by her move
to the Houston area. Formally trained as a chef,
Celeste's creativity crosses over into the musical
world as well. Her style, her sound and her love
for music were influenced by 50's r'n'b, 60's
soul, 70's disco, 80's country, 90's grunge, The
Beatles, U2, Radiohead ... and the list goes on
...
Michael
Pope: Co-founder and co-host of this showcase,
Michael has been writing songs for a few years
now. Many of his original's are open tuned, 5
finger picking, folk jazz instrumentals, but his
lyrics are strong and reflect his life's experiences.
Michael has one CD to his credit so far.
Willie
B: Willie describes himself as a bluesy guitar
player, but he is so much more. He is a gifted
and diverse guitar player who writes and performs
in many musical genres. Willie writes and sings
songs around the people in his life. He has been
a past recipient of HFBSA's
"Song
of the Year" and "Songwriter of the
Year". Willie has recorded four albums to
date and is currently working on his fifth solo
project.
The
Texas
Songwriters' Showcase
is
the
longest running
showcase in Houston. These songwriters will take
to the stage to entertain you with colossal musical
talent
and
wide-ranging
experience ... you
will not be disappointed.

Mark
Beets Band
Mark
has a sound which has been called "Organic
Americana". According to Ken Gaines, fellow
musician, "Mark's music will sneak up on
you. One minute you're listening politely and
the next minute you're either laughing or crying
your eyes out." It's fresh, different from
most of the stuff out there today. Long Ago
& Many Days, Mark's debut collection of
songs, was produced by White Cat Productions.

Across
the Water
True
to their name, Across The Water's all-acoustic
repertoire comes from both sides of the Atlantic
- just like the players. Steve Goodchild hails
from the north of England, and Bob Lahmeyer and
Paul Cooper are natives, respectively, of Missouri
and Texas. Despite diverse geographic roots, they
share some key things in common.
|
|
"I
think we all hooked into folk music early, and
started playing and singing when we were teenagers,"
says Paul, who remembers performing "Where
Have All the Flowers Gone" for his high school
assembly in the 1960s; Steve's father had to drive
him to gigs when he started performing in folk
clubs at fifteen, and Bob recalls his college
band "practicing Crosby, Stills, Nash and
Young numbers a capella for hours on road
trips until we had it nailed!"
 |
When
ATW comes to play, they show up with a lot of
instruments. All three play guitar. Bob can pick
a hard-as-nails bluegrass banjo on one number,
and then turn a deft hand to the bass on the next
one. Paul plays backup and solo mandolin, and
has recently been seen behind more exotic things
like bouzoukis and octave mandolins, holding Steve
totally accountable for his new fascination for
things with more than six strings! Depending on
the performance, Steve might come out toting a
mandolin, mandola, a cittern or even the mandocello
he calls "Bloodaxe". Stir three capable
voices into the instrumental mix and you have
all the ingredients for a veritable smorgasbord
of new and traditional music from their respective
countries and regions. They have also been known
to put aside the wood & wire and, without
the benefit of that safety-net, deliver the occasional
unaccompanied number in distinctive tight, three-part
harmony.

guys are passionate about their music, enjoy performing

Jack
Saunders CD Release
Party
Jack
Saunders has been a part of the Texas music scene
since the 70s. In recent years Jack has
garnered Best Acoustic Honors from the Houston
Press Music Awards; in 1998, 1999 and 2001,
plus he was nominated in multiple categories,
and won the 2000 "Critic's Choice" award
for overall excellence in writing and performance.
Besides his live performances, Jack owns the successful
White Cat Recording Studio.
| |
"The
good writers are storytellers. Theyve
got a good eye for detail and a gift for
language. Jack Saunders is at that level.
Its in the little details; [His are]
songs that any tunesmith would be proud
to have written. No doubt about it: this
is a major league songwriter." ~ Inside
Houston |
| |
"Saunders'
own music crosses a wide spectrum of American
genres, from blues to country, with many
other regional influences evident. One striking
aspect is his comfortable, almost casual
sound that is underpinned by excellent musicianship
and graceful production that seems to be
effortless." ~ Bill Aspinwall, Liner
