Texas Songwriter Showcase
Some of the best singer
songwriters from around the state of Texas grace
the JPHH stage on the second Friday of each month.
The featured artist for this evening's showcase
Saylor White and
Mark Beets. Please check back soon for details.
Mark Beets and Saylor White, two of the Houston area's most esteemed singer
songwriters, have joined forces to become the
White Beets. To their honor thus far, the duo
was a winner at the Songwriters Serenade in 2009;
individually Beets and White have each released
award winning CDs, plus both have penned songs
recorded by other artists.
Saylor White: East Texas born writer of
songs, poetry and short stories, Saylor White has written over two thousand songs in his better
than thirty years of word crafting, including
"Dress of Lace" recorded and performed
by Nanci Griffith and Lyle Lovett. Saylor is an
amazing and prolific songwriter with a musical
sense that comes as natural to him as breathing.
He is co-owner of A
Songwriters Studio in Houston, Texas.
Mark Beets: He has a sound which has been called "Organic
Americana". It's fresh, different from most
of the stuff out there today. In 2003 Long
Ago & Many Days, Mark's debut
collection of songs, was produced by White Cat
Productions and Beets was a finalist in the Wildflower
Festival songwriting competition. Mark's song
"The Road's Not Long Enough" was selected as the
lead single on The Houston Association of Acoustic
Musicians' first compilation CD.
Willie B: Willie
describes himself as a bluesy guitar player, but
he is so much more. He is a gifted and diverse
guitar player who writes and performs in many
musical genres. Willie writes and sings songs
around the people in his life. He has been a past
recipient of HFBSA's "Song of the Year"
and "Songwriter of the Year". Willie
has recorded four albums to date and is currently
working on his fifth solo project.
The Texas Songwriters' Showcase
is the longest running showcase in Houston. These
songwriters will take to the stage to entertain
you with colossal musical talent and wide-ranging
experience ... you will not be disappointed.

Tread Atlas
Thread Atlas is a symbiotic relationship of lush sonic soundscapes intertwined with powerful, provocative rhythms. Creating moods rich with subtle changes that draw the listener into a magical delivery of building tension, Thread Atlas deliver songs that are meditative in content like a favorite mantra that turn into a large orgy of sound. The dynamics are rich with a slow sensuous crescendo that resolves in purity and consistency. Gentle transitions of guitar along with intense drum and bass lines take the listener to a place that is at first interesting, then compelling and finally explosive.
Marc Nesbitt - Guitar/Vocals
Brian Hymel - Bass
Sean Strelecki - Drums

The
Moe Hansum Band

This 4-member band,
hailing from Houston, Texas, performs Americana
music with a strong emphasis on traditional acoustic
blues. Their Texas-bred music |
|
|
blends folk blues with a splash
of the soul and rhythm of the Mississippi Delta blues.
In concert the band presents a variety of their original
tunes, complemented by little-known covers from artists
such as Bukka White, Robert Johnson and Jimmy Reed. The
Moe Hansum Band has been together in many incarnations
since the early 1990's.
The instrumentation currently consists of two acoustic
and resonator guitarists, Mike Durbin and Chuck
Schwarz, upright acoustic bassist Sandy Buller and
drummer Stephan B. Miller. They have performed at
the Kerrville Folk Festival and many other locations
across Texas. This band of exceptionally talented
musicians is always a JP Hops House favorite. Moe's
music can be healing and therapeutic for those longing
for an authentic voice in traditional and modern
folk blues.

Constant Billy
A new day has dawned. There's a new band in the neighborhood, Constant Billy. Take the traditional music of England and Ireland, stir in a little rock, classical and swing, add intricate harmonies, shake in the accompaniment of Bodhran, guitar, tin whistle, recorder and bouzouki, sprinkle in a dash of hilarious between-songs banter, and you have a band that will leave you reeling. Constant Billy has been recognized as probably the best all-around folk a-cappella singers in Houston.
Emily Standish - vocals, tin whistle, recorder and percussion.
After years with Houston Symphony Chorus, and as featured soloist with several theater groups including Houston Revels and Trinity Opera Theater, Emily began singing with smaller ensembles in 1997. Has worked with the popular folk group Furagh Larq and the Early Music a cappella group Voces Dei. A powerful and passionate performer, Emily “sings with a purity of sound that is a joy to hear" and has "A voice like honey melted into crystal."
 |
Bill Galbraith - vocals, guitars, and Irish bouzouki.
Began playing in a rock group at 12, switched to Trad in 1977 as a founder of Freeborn, the first professional Celtic band in Texas. Moved on to the folk-rock group Four Bricks out of Hadrian’s Wall and sang doo-wop in Dr. T and the Tuxtones. Later worked with the a cappella band Nobody’s Reel. Has performed at festivals and clubs in Britain and America, and has extensive TV and radio credits including appearances on National Public Radio's All Things Considered and live internet performance.
 |
Dave Randall - electric bass, baritone ukulele, percussion, vocals.
The newest member of Constant Billy, Dave joined the music scene back in 1978 playing guitar, bass and drums in his high school jazz ensemble and in a neighborhood garage band. While at Sam Houston State University, he studied music theory and played bass in the SHSU jazz band. Over the years he's been in a variety of alternative music groups, including The Missiles, Mary Tyler Moron, Von Hindenburg, The Treehouse Project, Lugnut, Saturn X9000 and The Beige Dots. Dave has also been spotted playing guitar and singing at open mic nights around Houston.
