Ken
Gaines &
Wayne Wilkerson
On stage tonight ... two very talented, popular
entertainers who have been around the block a
few times. They are each well known in the Texas
music scene as powerful singers and creative,
prolific songwriters of the magic we call music!
Ken Gaines has "a beautifully clear
voice and articulate guitar accompaniment."
His lyrics are both powerful and poetic and highlight
his skills as a story teller and observer of life.
Ken's latest CD, Catfish Moon, recorded
at Songdog Records and co-produced by Bill Ward,
has been selling like hotcakes. He was the recipient
in 2005 for the Texas Music Awards - Singer/Songwriter
of the Year and the My Texan Award. He's a proud
member of MyTexasMusic.com.
Wayne Wilkerson is a guitar wizard for
sure ... artful mastery of the strings. His incredible
skills on the guitar makes him a truly amazing
lead player. Along with tasteful guitar licks,
you can hear Wayne's smooth harmonies.
You will not want these guys to stop playing at
the end of the night. This show is highly recommended!

Across
the Water
True to their name, Across
The Water features an all-acoustic repertoire
from both sides of the Atlantic - just like the
players. Steve Goodchild hails from the north
of England, and Bob Lahmeyer and Paul Cooper are
natives, respectively, of Missouri and Texas.
Despite diverse geographic roots, they share some
key things in common.
|
Across
the Water
|
"I think
we all hooked into folk music early, and started
playing and singing when we were teenagers,"
says Paul, who remembers performing "Where
Have All the Flowers Gone" for his high school
assembly in the 1960s; Steve's father had to drive
him to gigs when he started performing in folk
clubs at fifteen, and Bob recalls his college
band "practicing Crosby, Stills, Nash and
Young numbers a capella for hours on road
trips until we had it nailed!"
When ATW comes to play, they show up with a lot
of instruments. All three play guitar. Bob can
pick a hard-as-nails bluegrass banjo on one number,
and then turn a deft hand to the bass on the next
one. Paul plays backup and solo mandolin, and
has recently been seen behind more exotic things
like bouzoukis and octave mandolins, holding Steve
totally accountable for his new fascination for
things with more than six strings! Depending on
the performance, Steve might come out toting a
mandolin, mandola, a cittern or even the mandocello
he calls "Bloodaxe". Stir three capable
voices into the instrumental mix and you have
all the ingredients for a veritable smorgasbord
of new and traditional music from their respective
countries and regions. They have also been known
to put aside the wood & wire and, without
the benefit of that safety-net, deliver the occasional
unaccompanied number in distinctive tight, three-part
harmony.

These guys are passionate about their music, enjoy
performing it and sharing it with their audiences.

Dana
Cooper

Americana legend Dana Cooper has wowed crowds
throughout the U.S. and Europe recently, with
tunes from his newest album, Made of Mud
on King Easy Records. William Michael Smith of
The Houston Press wrote, The album
rumbles with plenty of roots-rock swagger
As a songwriter, Cooper shows he's paid attention
during his 30 years of trial-and-error authorship.
On Made of Mud, he repeatedly demonstrates
personal warmth, intellectual vigor and a Zen
grasp of imagery, metaphor, story line and poetics".
Dana's highly original lyrics, skillful guitar
work, evocative vocals and stage humor have earned
him a devoted following with fans and critics
alike. Cooper's songs have been recorded by artists
such as Maura O'Connell, Jonell Mosser, Susan
Werner, Jen Cohen, Christine Albert, Trout Fishing
in America, Pierce Pettis, Johnsmith and Shake
Russell.

We are always extremely
pleased to be able to present Dana and his music.

The
Moe Hansum Band

This 4-member band,
hailing from Houston, Texas, performs Americana
music with a strong emphasis on traditional acoustic
blues. Their Texas-bred music
|
|
|
blends folk blues with a splash
of the soul and rhythm of the Mississippi Delta blues.
In concert the band presents a variety of their original
tunes, complemented by little-known covers from artists
such as Bukka White, Robert Johnson and Jimmy Reed. The
Moe Hansum Band has been together in many incarnations
since the early 1990's.
The instrumentation currently consists of two acoustic
and resonator guitarists, Mike Durbin and Chuck
Schwarz, upright acoustic bassist Sandy Buller and
drummer Stephan B. Miller. They have performed at
the Kerrville Folk Festival and many other locations
across Texas. This band of exceptionally talented
musicians is always a JP Hops House favorite. Moe's
music can be healing and therapeutic for those longing
for an authentic voice in traditional and modern
folk blues.

Jon
Hogan
& Band
Think Woody Guthrie meets Townes Van Zandt and
the Carter Family to pick guitar with Kurt Cobain.
Singer/songwriter Jon Hogan blends a 1930s Progressive
sensibility with the soulful backbone of old-time
Appalachia and the gut-wrenching howl of the
itinerant, freethinking cosmic refugee. Hogan's
writing careens through unexpected topics and
spot-on social commentary, backed by a swinging'
upright bass and fingerpickin' guitars. Mix
in a little bluegrass, a little Eastern Europe
and scorching vocals, and you get an acoustic-rock
delivery that's sometimes understated, often
downright intense. Listeners who care about
hand-made, visionary folk art will get him completely.
Band personnel this evening is composed of Jon
Hogan on guitar and vocals, Maria Moss on guitar,
Matt Harlan provides lead guitar, Ned Mefford
on bass and David O'Dea plays banjo and sings
harmony.
