Texas Songwriter Showcase
Some of the best singer songwriters from around
the state of Texas grace the JPHH stage on the
second Friday of each month.
The
featured artists for this evening's showcase are Jim Kam and Van Buchanan.
Jim Kam: Jim is a Houston, Texas based musician whose primary instrument is the Chapman Stick. Originally trained as a classical pianist, Jim's repertoire on the Stick is an eclectic blend of classical, jazz, folk, rock, pop, blues, and traditional genres with the occasional Celtic ballad tossed in for good measure. While he may be an obscure guy, he is often recognized in bars as that guy who plays the funky weird-ass instrument.
Van Buchanan: Known for his witty and melodic songs, Van won the 2006 Songwriter of the Year and Song of the Year awards with the Houston Songwriters Association. He had two songs win Honorable Mention in the 2008 Woody Guthrie Songwriting Contest.
Through it all the songs have remained the one constant. Performance after performance, Van establishes the fact that he truly is a singing SONGWRITER.
Willie
B: Willie describes himself as a bluesy guitar
player, but he is so much more. He is a gifted
and diverse guitar player who writes and performs
in many musical genres. Willie writes and sings
songs around the people in his life. He has been
a past recipient of HFBSA's "Song
of the Year" and "Songwriter of the
Year". Willie has recorded four albums to
date and is currently working on his fifth solo
project.
The Texas
Songwriters' Showcase
is
the
longest running
showcase in Houston. These songwriters will take
to the stage to entertain you with colossal musical
talent
and
wide-ranging
experience ... you
will not be disappointed.

The Blenders
The Blenders evolved from the duo of Judy Minshew and Don Mason, who began performing together in Houston in 1983. The ensemble's present five member configuration dates to 2006. They focus on clean, three-part harmonies (often a cappella) with unobtrusive instrumental accompaniment. The Blenders' material includes original compositions and original interpretations of familiar country, folk and rock, mostly from the 1960s and 1970s. The band's personnel consists of Judy Minshew on vocals and keyboard, Don Mason on vocals, guitar and harmonica, Bill Prewitt on vocals and guitar, Greg Hassell contributes banjo, mandolin and guitar, and Bill “Monty” Montgomery provides bass.
The Blenders are regular performers at the JPHH annual John Prine Birthday Party.

Smythe & Taylor Double CD Release Party
with special guest Jack Saunders
Smythe and Taylor (TC Smythe and Gary Taylor) are known for their tight, symbiotic harmonies, their humorous lyrics and ‘3-D’ brand of guitar playing. They've been performing together since 2000 and have 7 CDs between them. They offer an eclectic variety of acoustic music, including contemporary and familiar tunes as well as their award-winning originals.
Their live shows celebrate the craft of songwriting in bluegrass, blues, folk, and Americana music. 'S&T' love to hit the road and perform for audiences in listening rooms and house concerts, but they also have a healthy number of gigs in night clubs and restaurants. Both writers have had leadership positions with Texas music organizations, such as the Houston Songwriter's Association and the Houston Association of Acoustic Musicians.
Their latest release is a double album with both live and studio tracks. Come What May (the studio album) represents the culmination of eight years of musical collaboration with veteran music producer, Jack Saunders of White Cat Records. It features a wide and wild variety of music to include jazz, folk, pop, bluegrass and modern celtic music.
You Shoulda Been Here Yesterday is a live visitation of six listening venues from Europe to Texas where the duo perform an eclectic mix of obscurica from local writers as well as the lesser-known gems of more famous artists.
Come be part of this special evening as TC and Gary introduce us to their two latest creations. Honored guest Jack Saunders will join the duo as well as many other musical friends.
