July 2006

July 1, 2006 - Saturday
Ken Gaines & Wayne Wilkerson
Featured in Mississippi Coast Magazine, writer Max Biedenharn describes Ken Gaines as:
“A singer songwriter with a beautifully clear voice and articulate guitar accompaniment, Ken has played and studied a lot of music, but it’s obvious that he’s also studied himself and his craft

and is committed to finding what’s original and at the same time, universal in his experiences.”

“I look for those venues that are surrounded by a spirit dedicated to quality. Those audiences are very precious to me. In the course of a concert, I would like to make you laugh, and cry, and ultimately think about what we are, and what we may become. That is my passion.” ~ Ken Gaines

"Together, Ken and Wayne are Houston's premier duo for folk from the heart. Ken's styling provides the foundation, while Wayne adds just the right amount of spice to serve up a rare ambrosia for your soul." ~ Texas Firelight Theater

Fahl & Folk
The band Fahl & Folk is the newest vehicle for David Fahl’s music. The basic sound is the traditional folkie vocal, acoustic guitar, and harmonica, with Michael Farber’s electric bass adding a groove that turns up the energy level way past the cliched mellow associated (often in error) with the folksinger trip. This pair is frequently augmented by Jimmy Deen on acoustic and electric guitars, and Chaz Nadege on keyboard and snare drum.
The Fahl & Folk sound is both familiar and innovative. The instrumentation is simple and familiar-sounding. The songs hit comfortable grooves and go places where folksingers are seldom heard. Fahl’s songs come from a perspective that uses all the traditions we hear around us and twists them into new combinations, telling stories about lovers, murderers, and the helpless schmoes who just have a hard time dealing with life in this bizarre new millenium. When the band does a cover tune, it’s rarely one from the standards of ‘classic rock’, and it never sounds like the way you’re used to hearing it.
So come hear for yourself!

Texas Songwriter Showcase
Some of the best singer songwriters from around the state of Texas grace the JPHH stage on
the second Friday of each month. The featured artists for this evening's showcase are Mark Zeus and Joe Kowan.
Mark Zeus: A veteran songwriter, live performer and recording artist whose music features an eclectic mix of folk, country, rock and blues often intertwined with various ethnic and indigenous rhythms. Mark's lyrics tend to reflect experiences within the human condition, while often addressing social and political issues and concerns with humor as well as urgency.
Joe Kowan: His songs put a humorous edge on psycho-spiritual themes and can make you burst with laughter or blush beet red. Joe's songs cover topics ranging from the bitter relationship to theoretical physics, religion, personal hygiene and even parental copulation. You can't miss the unique musical style, straight forward voice and comedic sensibility that keeps audiences crying with laughter, cringing with discomfort and always riveted
Michael Pope: Co-founder and co-host of this showcase, Michael has been writing songs for a couple years now. Many of his original's are open tuned, 5 finger picking, folk jazz instrumentals, but his lyrics are strong and reflect his life's experiences. Michael recently released his debut album.
Willie B: Willie describes himself as a bluesy guitar player, but he is so much more. He is a gifted and diverse guitar player who writes and performs in many musical genres. Willie writes and sings songs around the people in his life. He has won "Song of the Year" and "Songwriter of the Year" in HFBSA. Willie has recorded four albums to date.
The Texas Songwriters' Showcase always fills the stage with vast musical experience, guaranteeing that the show will be an exhilarating musical phenomenon! Come experience the phenom!

Rhett Butler
How often do you see someone play two guitars at the same time?
Musician Rhett Butler is renowned for his ability with the guitar - the University of North Texas grad can play two instruments at once with greater ease than most can play one. Butler has built a reputation for his innovations in guitar and he is best known for playing two guitars at the same time.

"It's not jazz, it's not new age, it's not classical, but the techniques are. It's obsessive-compulsive guitar music." ~ Rhett
Without a record deal, the Texan has managed to sell more than 12,000 CDs of his instrumental guitar music. Reviews have heralded him as an instrumental genius, incorporating sounds which stretch across genres. We are honored to welcome this traveling troubadour to the JPHH stage.

Guy Schwartz & the New Jack Hippies
Texas' premiere blues, rock, hippie jam band, led by singer/songwriter Guy Schwartz and often including his sidekick/co-writer, Roger Tausz will be jammin' out right here on the JPHH stage.
Schwartz and his merry band of musicians, the New Jack Hippies, can match the enthusiasm of any band. About 30 great musicians make up the core of this band but more than 300 claim membership in the collective, which he describes as a "Texas blues rock hippie jam band." Some play regularly -- like keyboardist Chaz Nadege and Schwartz's long-time collaborator, bassist Roger Tausz -- while others just show up for gigs from time to time. The gigs they've played for the past year have had anywhere from 7 to 18 musicians, of which 3 - 5 are leaders of their own bands. "I never intended to have the responsibility of a band," Schwartz says. "It was an accident."
Guy has played with Muddy Waters, Lionel Hampton, John Lee Hooker, Sam 'Lightning' Hopkins, B.W. Stevenson, Jimmy Reed, Blaze Foley, Roy Head, Sonny James, Little Joe Washington, Trudy Lynn, Fever Tree, Freddy Fender, Chuck Berry, Milton Hopkins, Rick Lee and the Night Owls, Big Daddy Gumbo & the Sheetrockers, Chip Arnold & The Terraplanes, Heath Spencer Philip, Sandy Hickey, Gerald Gray, Michael Williams, Steve Radney, Don Sanders, Ashton Savoy, Opie Hendrix and Gloria Edwards.
His band has opened up for or shared the bill with Todd Rundgren & Utopia, U2, Eddie Harris, Duran Duran, Ramones, Delbert McClinton, Sparks, David Lindley, Little Feat, Huey Lewis and the News, Eric Johnson, Carolyn Wonderland, Muddy Waters, Rush, Golden Earring, Johnny Winter, Romantics, Jeff Beck and ZZ Top.
His songs have been recorded by Gloria Edwards, Relayer, The Calvin Owens Blues Orchestra, Z-Rocks, Kinky Friedman, Opie Hendrix, Anthony Moore, Father's Chief, Heath Spencer Phillip, Little Joe Washington and The New Jack Hippies.
We are very excited and honored to have Guy Schwartz & The New Jack Hippies play here. Never heard them play before? Well, better be here...this is a show you should not miss!

Shake Russell

From Bar Harbor, Maine to Santa Fe, New Mexico; from Los Angeles, California to Nashville, Tennessee, one can mention among Texas songwriters, the name “Shake Russell” and be virtually assured of interest, pleasure and joyful recognition.
If you’re a true Texan, then Shake Russell’s music has touched your life in some way. If you’re not, it happened without your knowing it. Seventeen million copies of this Texan’s songs have been bought while being recorded by the likes of Clint Black, Ricky Skaggs, Waylon Jennings, and others.
We are always thrilled when Shake chooses to play our humble establishment. Tonight he will be making a rare solo appearance. Please help us to welcome him to the stage at JP Hops House and join us for what promises to be another great "shakin" show.

Travis Mitchell Band
The TMB is a result of what happens when you combine a huge Texas Music fan, a couple of Heavy Metal hipsters and a Music Scholar with a degree in Jazz. We don’t know why it works either, but we’re just glad it does…
The result of all these varying backgrounds is
a sound that’s as original and upbeat as the great state they represent. While this band’s roots are planted firmly within Texas Country, their Live performance is a mix of heart pounding rock with a country flare that is unmistakable. This young band has accomplished much over the course of a year, and for them the path ahead is clear. Continue making truthful down to earth music, and sharing it with everyone they can.
