JULY 2005

July 1, 2005 - Friday
Dave Boodakian

Playing just about anywhere he can and loving every minute of it, Dave Boodakian is not your average singer/songwriter.
Raised in Boston, and performing classical guitar since age 9, Dave has spent countless hours in front of an audience whether at nursing homes or in the mean streets of Harvard Square.
In a solo acoustic show Dave's songs may range from slow, carefully crafted ballads to in-your-face folk songs about lesbians, to rap medleys.

"When writing music I'm an artist, when playing I'm a musician, but when I'm performing - I'm an entertainer."
" When I go to see live music, I want to be entertained, I want to be impressed with the quality of music, and I want to feel the music the way the artist does. That's exactly what I try to give my audience, whether it's 2 people or 200."
Note: We have heard cuts from Dave's CD, High School Hero, and we were impressed! Come join us to witness this up and coming, fresh young talent.

Texas Songwriters' Showcase
Some of the best singer songwriters from around the state of Texas grace the JPHH stage on
the second Friday of each month. The featured artists for this evening's showcase are Dan Ennis plus Kat and Tony Rose.
Dan Ennis: The music of Dan Ennis could be generally categorized as acoustic folk with remnants of classic country, acoustic pop, and even rock and roll. Dan is very accomplished as a musician and a unique singer-songwriter whose lyrics are profound and refreshing. His music not only entertains, but often carries a message derived from political or sociological influences. He has recorded two albums to date.
KatRose: KatRose is warm, open-hearted and honest with a sound that lies somewhere between folk, soul and gospel. Her performances convey her passion for live music. As a prolific songwriter, KatRose paints a sequence of vivid and passionate stories. Her debut CD, Power & Passion, was launched earlier this year right here at JP Hops House to a packed audience.
Tony Rose: Though a reluctant performer (usually a couple of pints at JP Hops House works), this Houston-based songwriter can be found playing his original songs at many of the open mics around town. Tony is also the bass guitarist for the KatRose Band.
Michael Pope: Co-founder and co-host of this showcase, Michael has been writing songs for a couple years now. Many of his original's are open tuned, 5 finger picking, folk jazz instrumentals, and his lyrics are strong, reflecting his life's experiences. Michael is currently recording his debut album.
Willie B: Willie describes himself as a bluesy guitar player, but he is so much more. He is a gifted and diverse guitar player who writes and performs in many musical genres. Willie writes and sings songs around the people in his life. He has won "Song of the Year" and "Songwriter of the Year" in HFBSA. Willie has recorded four albums to date.
The Texas Songwriters' Showcase always fills the stage with vast musical experience, guaranteeing that the show will be an exhilarating musical phenomenon! Come experience the phenom!

Rob McNurlin
A native of eastern Kentucky, Rob began studying traditional music learning hundreds of folk, hillbilly-blues and Gospel tunes. Inspired by Cash, Dylan, Woody Guthrie and Hank Williams, he started writing songs, mixing his originals with the traditional.
Rob has released four CDs including Cowboy Boot Heel which was recorded at Johnny Cash's Cabin Studio and produced by his son John Carter Cash. The CD features a duet with guest Ramblin' Jack Elliott. His latest CD, Buffalo Skinners, is a collection of traditional songs performed with his band the Beatnik Cowboys.
McNurlin has toured with Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Hot Tuna. His songs have been covered by Ronnie Elliott among others and used in two award winning documentaries. He is currently touring and working on a Gospel CD.

"More than many practitioners, he grasps the fundamental truth of real folk music; that it only looks simple. McNurlin knows better. The old is new in his capable hands, and dead voices rise to pass their tales on to the living. It's all here; wisdom, folly, love, hope, the beckoning road."
~ Jerome Clark, amazon.com

Rob is scheduled to perform at the 2005 Woody Guthrie Folk Festival in Okemah, OK this July.

Juneau
Three guitars, three voices - Juneau is an original acoustic trio comprised of siblings Anthony, Patrick, and Laurie Juneau.
Patrick: A Sam Houston State University music major, Patrick plays guitar, bass guitar, mandolin, and harmonica,

as well as brass instruments. He has played guitar virtually all of his life, inspiring siblings Anthony and Laurie to play guitar, sing and write.
Anthony: Since moving to Austin in 1995, Anthony has worked with many musicians and acts, in addition to his work with Juneau. He plays lead guitar for a female duo called Avenue Elle, as well as doing a lot of co-writing and guitar work for the duo Middle Ground … all the while writing and honing his lead guitar and bass guitar chops.
Laurie: Songwriting is her passion and she has been involved with the Austin Songwriters Group since 1990, having served as a board member for three years. Laurie currently sings and plays acoustic guitar with Juneau, as well as with the gospel music group Fifth Sunday of Driftwood.
Over the last two decades, all three became, and continue to be, serious songwriters -- drawing on all types of musical influences and life experiences. Their first CD, the self-titled Juneau, which was produced and recorded by Jack Saunders at White Cat Studio in Houston, debuted here at JPHH one year ago tonight.
It's rock, it's country, it's folk - it's all got that Texas-edge ... plus … you just can't beat that sibling harmony! Avenue Elle will be performing the opening set this evening.

Songwriters in the Round
Mild-mannered, Austin-based Steve Brooks is a folksinger/humorist with the energy of a Texas twister and eclectic songs that range from the sublime to the ridiculous and back. He never loses his sense of fun, even when touching the most serious subjects. If there's a common thread to Steve's songs, it's about looking at the world from a slightly different angle than the one you're used to, or from several angles at once. Steve puts it a bit more poetically, "A single new star rearranges a whole constellation."
A Platinum Plus Universal recording artist with 2 CDs to her credit, Jen Rathbun sings and writes multi-faceted compositions loaded with personality. She's a pro at tickling the ivories, and she'll tickle your fancy as well.
East Texas born writer of songs, poetry and short stories, Saylor White has written over two thousand songs in his thirty years of word crafting, including "Dress of Lace" recorded and performed by Nanci Griffith and Lyle Lovett.
