Ken
Gaines, Wayne
Wilkerson &
Bud Bierhaus
On stage tonight ... two very talented, popular
entertainers who have been around the block a
few times. They are each well known in the Texas
music scene as powerful singers and creative,
prolific songwriters of the magic we call music!
Ken Gaines has "a beautifully clear
voice and articulate guitar accompaniment."
His lyrics are both powerful and poetic and highlight
his skills as a story teller and observer of life.
Ken's latest CD, Catfish Moon, recorded
at Songdog Records and co-produced by Bill Ward,
has been selling like hotcakes. He was the recipient
in 2005 for the Texas Music Awards - Singer/Songwriter
of the Year and the My Texan Award. He's a proud
member of MyTexasMusic.com.
Wayne Wilkerson is a guitar wizard for
sure ... artful mastery of the strings. His incredible
skills on the guitar makes him a truly amazing
lead player. Along with tasteful guitar licks,
you can hear Wayne's smooth harmonies.
Newcomer, Bud Bierhaus has bluegrass roots
that are true, high and lonesome! He makes that
old D-18 sound like it's supposed to.
You will not want these guys to stop playing at
the end of the night. This show is highly recommended!

George
Ensle &
Greg
Whitfield
George Ensle, (pronounced
Enslee), began songwriting and performing as
a teenager in the late sixties in his hometown,
Houston at such venerable clubs as the Sand
Mountain Coffeehouse and the original Old Quarter,
sharing stages with legendary folk greats, Townes
Van Zandt, Guy Clark, and Jerry Jeff Walker.
While touring the club, college coffeehouse
and festival circuit, he was awarded a prestigious
Federal Government Grant to be an Artist-In-Schools,
teaching songwriting and the creative process
to elementary schoolchildren. George has wonsongwriting
awards from The American Song Festival, the
Kerrville Folk Festival, the Music Umbrella,
and the Austin Songwriters Group, and has released
five albums in the U.S. and Europe. In 2008
he was nominated for Singer/Songwriter of the
Year by the Texas Music Academy.
|
|
George has a unique fingerpicking
style originating from his classical guitar training
and honed over the years to flow seamlessly with
his lyrics. He has been called a "songpainter,"
capturing "lifescapes", with storysong
portraits of "real people making it in the
real world."
Greg Whitfield is an veteran

Tim
Henderson
& Bill
Ward
Tim Henderson was born in the coal country
of West Virginia and raised in Nitro and Charleston,
along with five brothers and a sister. He is considered
by many to be one of Americas outstanding
folk song writers.
Musically, his Grandma quilled
the mountain dulcimer and sang songs that have
been in those mountains since they left Scotland
and Wales in the 1700s. His mother played classical
piano. Tim played the piano
|
|
| from
age 9. He was given his first guitar at age 14 by
Robert Easley, the black janitor at his school.
Imagine Tim's shock when he brought it home and
his Grandpa grabbed it and played Over the
Waves, the old circus song. Tim was singing
You Are My Sunshine for crowds of strangers
when he was two.
Tim has tried to play nearly
everything with strings, including a 19-string lute.
He considers his playing adequate, but says that
you must judge for yourself. In performing, he uses
a guitar that he bought from the designer in Spain
in 1965. It is a gut string classical guitar with
a flamenco neck. Tim says, I would sooner
part with my right arm. As a vocalist, I can only
tell you that I enunciate well and sing only marginally
better than Willie Nelson, and maybe a little louder.
Tom Paxton calls Tim The
bear who laughs
Loud.
If music was a meal, Bill
Ward would be a banquet. With a personal background
as diverse as the number of instruments he plays,
Bill is a marathon man of music.
Although Bill draws inspiration
from many styles of music, he is a folk singer/songwriter
in the truest sense of the term. His songs illustrate
the plight of common folk from every walk of life,
whether it's the unending struggles of the American
Indian or the unfortunate reality of the drug pusher
on your local street corner, his music conveys a
message. Like a painter with a brush and canvas,
he portrays vivid, haunting pictures of our lives
- past, present and future. As you close your eyes
and listen, you can feel the Texas Hill Country
wind on your face and recall fond childhood dreams
of growing up to be a cowboy. Whether it's a slow
waltz or a driving rock song, Bill captures the
hearts and minds of his listeners time and time
again with his dynamic stage presence, gripping
prose and unforgettable melodies. |

NSAI Sunday Songswap
@ 4:00 pm
Every 4th Sunday JP Hops House will host a NSAI Sunday Songswap from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, followed by our traditional Sunday Night Open Mic
This is not a formal meeting, program, showcase or critique format- just writers hanging out with other writers, giving and getting some inspiration. We will do a “song circle” style of gathering, for writers to try out a new song or two and get feedback from fellow writers. You do not have to be a member of NSAI to attend or participate. Go to http://myspace.com/nsaihoustonnorthmetro for more information, or send an email to nsai.houstonnorthmetro@gmail.com.
