Texas Songwriter Showcase
Some of the best singer songwriters from around
the state of Texas grace the JPHH stage on the
second Friday of each month.
The
featured artists for this evening's showcase are
Jen
Rathbun and and
Dan
Ennis.
Jen
Rathbun: A Platinum Plus Universal recording
artist with 2 CDs to her credit, Jen sings and
writes multi-faceted compositions loaded with
personality. Jen received two nominations in Just
Plain Folks 2006 Music Awards - Best Cabaret Album
and Best Cabaret Song. She's a pro at tickling
the ivories, and she'll tickle your fancy as well.
Dan
Ennis: The music of Dan Ennis could be generally
categorized as acoustic folk with remnants of
classic country, acoustic pop, and even rock and
roll. Dan is very accomplished as a musician and
a unique singer-songwriter whose lyrics are profound
and refreshing. His music not only entertains,
but often carries a message derived from political
or sociological influences. He has recorded two
albums to date.
Jeff
Hoofard: Jeff
has been playing drums for local and national
acts since 1986 sharing the stage with such icons
as Bo Diddley and Chubby Checker as well as some
of Texas best acoustic artists. He has been
the percussionist of choice on several recording
projects and is currently playing with Willie
B & The Silverbacks. Jeff
is our "house" percussionist.
Michael
Pope: Co-founder and co-host of this showcase,
Michael has been writing songs for a few years
now. Many of his original's are open tuned, 5
finger picking, folk jazz instrumentals, but his
lyrics are strong and reflect his life's experiences.
Michael has one CD to his credit so far.
Willie
B: Willie describes himself as a bluesy guitar
player, but he is so much more. He is a gifted
and diverse guitar player who writes and performs
in many musical genres. Willie writes and sings
songs around the people in his life. He has been
a past recipient of HFBSA's
"Song
of the Year" and "Songwriter of the
Year". Willie has recorded four albums to
date and is currently working on his fifth solo
project.
The
Texas
Songwriters' Showcase
is
the
longest running
showcase in Houston. These songwriters will take
to the stage to entertain you with colossal musical
talent
and
wide-ranging
experience ... you
will not be disappointed.

The
Moe Hansum Band

This 4-member band, hailing
from Houston, Texas, performs Americana music
with a strong emphasis on traditional acoustic
blues. Their Texas-bred music
|
|
|
blends
folk blues
with a splash of the soul and rhythm of the Mississippi
Delta blues. In concert the band presents a variety of
their original tunes, complemented by little-known
covers from artists such as Bukka White, Robert Johnson
and Jimmy Reed. The
Moe Hansum Band has been together in
many incarnations since the early 1990's.
The
instrumentation currently consists of two acoustic
and resonator guitarists, Mike Durbin and Chuck
Schwarz, upright acoustic bassist Sandy Buller and
drummer Stephan B. Miller. They have performed at
the Kerrville Folk Festival and many other locations
across Texas. This band of exceptionally
talented musicians is
always a JP Hops House favorite. Moe's music can
be healing and therapeutic for those longing for
an authentic voice in traditional and modern folk
blues.
Come join us as "Moe Celebrates" January
... Mo'Birthdays and Mo'Anniversaries.

Saylor
White, Butch
Morgan and Kenyon
White
Saylor White: East
Texas born writer of songs, poetry and short stories,
Saylor has written over two thousand songs in
his better than thirty years of word crafting,
including "Dress of Lace" recorded and
performed by Nanci Griffith and Lyle Lovett.
Saylor
is an amazing and prolific songwriter with a musical
sense that comes as natural to him as breathing.
 |
Butch
Morgan : Never let it be said the Claude "Butch"
Morgan isn't passionate about life. His songs
are often spiritual in nature, but they're full
of fun and carry simple but powerful messages.
Butch Morgan has an ability to take life's simplicity
and put a striking message inside in the form
of a song, a great example being his "God
Drives A Pick-up Truck". Morgan's "Blubberball"
is an attest to all that can go wrong when you
don't take care of yourself, and is a song performed
entirely with one chord. As Butch says, "It
starts off in G, then goes to G for the solos,
then we wrap it up in G."
Kenyon
White: Kenyon is a young guitar phenom, as
well as a gifted artist, sculptor, singer and
writer.
"I believe if you write from the heart, work
really hard for what you want, and are at least
decently talented you will succeed with or without
todays music industry. People want to hear good
songs they can connect to." ~ Kenyon

Sugar
Bayou
Sugar
Bayou write and play eclectic acoustic music -
joyful and complex, with ethereal vocals and instruments
infused with folk, swingy bluesy jazz, Celtic,
bluegrass, Cajun & South American traditions,
plus a touch of Texas rockin country. Hard
to describe, amazing to listen to.
Bob
Oldreive: Bob has a musical pedigree the
|
|
size of the Big Bend, and glorious voice to match.
He plays amazing and lush guitar, and writes exquisite
songs that are destined to live forever. In 1973,
Bob and Joe Lindley formed Houstons seminal
country rock band, Dogtooth Violet. Their high energy
shows garnered both critical acclaim and a loyal
following, and their record is a highly coveted
collectors item. They opened for greats such
as Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings,
and would regularly pack the Texas Opry House, Liberty
Hall, Miller Outdoor Theater, the Sweetheart
of Texas and Rockefellers (to name a few).
April
Rapier: April sang demos in Nashville and elsewhere
for ten years, writing and performing in the US,
Mexico, Central America and Europe. She plays guitar,
mandolin, piano and spoons, and annoys her cats
and dog with incessant banjo and accordion practice.
She was a photographer and artist, her work residing
in major museum, private and corporate collections
here and abroad. She is completing her first novel,
and would be finished by now if she could figure
out what to call it.
 |
Paul
Kiteck: Born and raised in Kentucky bluegrass
country, Paul is an experienced fiddler, having
performed with groups from Colorado to North Carolina.
He was a member of Houston's Lonestar Bluegrass
Band for ten years, starting in 1988. He has several
recording sessions to his credit, including Flying
Fish Records, Lonestar Records, Don Sanders and
Leeway (and soon to begin work on Sugar Bayous
second CD). When he isn't playing music, Paul is
an acoustic engineer in Houston, traveling all over
the country for work. He also moonlights as a top-notch,
highly sought-after sound engineer for festivals
and events around Texas.
 |
Robert
Knetsch: Robert has performed and recorded with
numerous musical artists and ensembles, representing
a wide range of musical styles including jazz, classical,
country, folk, rock and world music. In addition
to bass/bass guitar he also plays drums/percussion,
guitar and clarinet. Robert works from time to time
as a CPA and lives in Houston with his dog Pearl.
Bill
Browder: Bill began playing professionally with
the Four Dudes, a Houstonarea Temptations
knock-off band in 1969. He joined Denim in the summer
of 1970, and they were signed by two major labels
in the mid to late 70s. After Denim disbanded
in 1980, he played with The Austin AllStars
and Duck Soup. Denim reformed in 1990, and is still
recording and performing today. Other acts that
Bill plays with are The Big Time, The Heroes, and
Sugar Bayou. At the age of 4, Bill took a nap in
Jayne Mansfields' bed.
Currently
Bob and April are writing and the band is hard at
work on their second, as-yet unnamed CD (April likes
the sound of Whatever She Wants),
which follows the incredible success of
their first release, Nowhere But Gone,
which was recorded at SugarHill Studios, produced
by Robbie Parrish, co-produced by Bob and April.
