Texas Songwriter Showcase
Some of the best singer songwriters from around the state of Texas grace the JPHH stage on
the second Friday of each month. The featured artists for this evening's showcase are Saylor White, Ray Younkin and Jeff Hoofard. Please check back soon for further details.
Saylor White: East Texas born writer of songs, poetry and short stories, he has written over two thousand songs in his thirty years of word crafting, including "Dress of Lace" recorded and performed by Nanci Griffith and Lyle Lovett.
"... few writers we have ever heard can knit pieces so masterful as Saylor White." ~ Crossroads Magazine, France
Ray Younkin: Ray Younkin uses his talent to tell stories, and wonderful stories they are. Every Shake Russell fan will marvel at Younkin’s voice. Dylan fans will remark of Younkin’s lyrics. Tommy Elskes fans will enjoy Younkin’s delivery. Balladeer fans rejoice, Ray Younkin is one of the best ever.
Jeff Hoofard: Jeff has been playing drums for local and national acts since 1986 sharing the stage with such icons as Bo Diddley and Chubby Checker as well as some of Texas’ best acoustic artists. He has been the percussionist of choice on several recording projects and is currently playing with The Moe Hansum Blues Band. Tonight he is our "house" percussionist.
Michael Pope: Co-founder and co-host of this showcase, Michael has been writing songs for a couple years now. Many of his original's are open tuned, 5 finger picking, folk jazz instrumentals, but his lyrics are strong and reflect his life's experiences. Michael recently released his debut album.
Willie B: Willie describes himself as a bluesy guitar player, but he is so much more. He is a gifted and diverse guitar player who writes and performs in many musical genres. Willie writes and sings songs around the people in his life. He has won "Song of the Year" and "Songwriter of the Year" in HFBSA. Willie has recorded four albums to date.
The Texas Songwriters' Showcase always fills the stage with vast musical experience, guaranteeing that the show will be an exhilarating musical phenomenon! Come experience the phenom!

H.A.A.M. National Folk Alliance Meeting
From the Desk of
HAAMsterette April Kelly:
Hello HAAMsters!
The National Folk Alliance is coming up soon and it's time to get our act(s) in gear! The NFA meeting will be held at JP Hops House, Monday, January 16th, at 7:30pm. If you have signed on to go or are thinking about going, you need to make it to this meeting. (If you absolutely cannot make the meeting, but would like to get information about what's going on, please write back to me and let me know. I'll try to keep you up to speed.) We will be deciding our game plan for marketing HAAM at the conference and will start the booking process for the HAAM Showcase Room. We'll also discuss ways to promote our group during the conference.
If you are going, be thinking of easy/inexpensive ways to market HAAM to the masses so that we have a good turnout in our Showcase Room....Many minds are so much better than one, so let's do the tribal thing and put our heads together on this. We have "HAAMster Power" buttons, thanks to MTM, and will probably have schedule placards attached to the buttons to hand out, but let's see if we can come up with some other creative ways to get HAAM's name out there. (Anyone know of a giant, inflatable hamster that we can get cheap? Hamster hats at a dollar store? Cheap T-Shirts for printing on?) Even if you are NOT going to go, let me know if you have some clever ideas on how to get folks to come to our room after the main showcases...All for one and one for all!
See you at the meeting!!
Party on, HAAMsters,
:o) April Kelly

Rhett Butler
How often do you see someone play two guitars at the same time?
Musician Rhett Butler is renowned for his ability with the guitar - the University of North Texas grad can play two instruments at once with greater ease than most can play one. Butler has built a reputation for his innovations in guitar and he is best known for playing two guitars at the same time.

"It's not jazz, it's not new age, it's not classical, but the techniques are. It's obsessive-compulsive guitar music." ~ Rhett
Without a record deal, the Texan has managed to sell more than 12,000 CDs of his instrumental guitar music. Reviews have heralded him as an instrumental genius, incorporating sounds which stretch across genres. We are honored to welcome this traveling troubadour to the JPHH stage.

Moe Hansum Band
with a splash of the soul and rhythm of the Mississippi Delta. Fahl & Folk
The band Fahl & Folk is the newest vehicle for David Fahl’s music. The basic sound is the traditional folkie vocal, acoustic guitar, and harmonica, with Michael Farber’s electric bass adding a groove that turns up the energy level way past the cliched mellow associated (often in error) with the folksinger trip. This pair is frequently augmented by Jimmy Deen on acoustic and electric guitars, and Chaz Nadege on keyboard and snare drum.
The Fahl & Folk sound is both familiar and innovative. The instrumentation is simple and familiar-sounding. The songs hit comfortable grooves and go places where folksingers are seldom heard. Fahl’s songs come from a perspective that uses all the traditions we hear around us and twists them into new combinations, telling stories about lovers, murderers, and the helpless schmoes who just have a hard time dealing with life in this bizarre new millenium. When the band does a cover tune, it’s rarely one from the standards of ‘classic rock’, and it never sounds like the way you’re used to hearing it.
So come hear for yourself!

Big Lizard Boys
Comprised of band members Bill Aspinwall, Mike Crippen and Mike Darnell, Big Lizard Boys incorporate guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass and harmonica into an eccentric blend of folk,
rock

and blues. Influences include a whole lotta bands (even a few musicians) (and all their splintered offspring), John Fahey’s dog, and a whole lotta the classic and contemporary blues masters. Playing predominantly original material, they add a few traditional and classic tunes to their set list and on occasion will bring out the infamous Cachaça Rhythm Section for some home brew, front porch, foot-stomping music with a Texas flavor.
Big Lizard Boys has invited Terry Rogers to take part in the fray as their "special guest" this evening. Terry will join the band towards the end of the first set and will be featured on harmonica and vocals on several songs. Terry is a harmonica player extraordinaire and plays Chicago style blues.
