Cask-Conditioned
Enlightenment
A cask-conditioned beer, often referred to as 'real ale'
is brewed from only traditional ingredients and allowed
to mature naturally. The unfiltered, unpasteurised beer
still contains live yeast, which continues conditioning
the beer in the cask. This process creates a gentle, natural
CO2 carbonation and allows malt and hop flavors to develop,
resulting in a richer tasting beer with more character
than standard keg beer. 'Real ale' is always served without
any extraneous gas. This is the traditional way of brewing
and serving beer; only a few decades ago did filtered,
pasteurized, chilled beer served by gas become normal.

Mark
Zeus & Thunderboltz
Mark
Zeus, the omnipresent great god of folk/rock,
is a veteran songwriter, live performer and
recording artist whose music features an eclectic
mix of folk, country, rock and blues often intertwined
with various ethnic and indigenous rhythms.
Mark's lyrics tend to reflect experiences within
the human condition, while often addressing
social and political issues and concerns with
humor as well as urgency.
Having
been born and raised on the Westside of Chicago,
where he was a leader in the music and songwriting
community, Mark relocated to Houston in January
of 2000 where he has also become a major contributor
to the burgeoning local scene. For the past seven
years, Mark has been splitting time between the
two cities, although currently settling into a
regular schedule in Texas, with his band, Thunderboltz.
Their
CD, Mark Zeus/Thunderboltz, represents
a unique combination of styles, themes, and performances.
Just
a great local band with remarkable musicians and
songs to match.

The
Hudsons

The Hudsons are an original four piece band
from Austin,
|
|
|
Texas.
Their
genuine love of performing brought them together
in 2002. Starting out as a talented and quirky
songwriter duo, Hudson Mueller and Brian Hudson
played guitars and wrote their songs. In time,
Phoebe Hunt joined to make
a trio with her graceful fiddle playing
and added a feminine touch to the group. Most
recently the
band welcomed Jason Vopni on
upright bass. The Hudsons shine in their intimate
lyrics, thoughtful arrangements and charming stage
presence.
Their excellent songs and warm vocal harmonies
make the Hudsons a must hear.

Texas Songwriter Showcase
Some of the best singer songwriters from around
the state of Texas grace the JPHH stage on the
second Friday of each month.
The featured artists for this evening's showcase
are Connie
Mims
and Matt
Harlan.
Connie
Mims: Connie began her musical career in
1973 as a part of the group Wheatfield which evolved
into St. Elmo's Fire, performing everywhere from
the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, to
The Troubadour in Los Angeles, to St. Croix, USVI.
She has appeared on the PBS series Austin City
Limits and in the classic Blue Bell Ice Cream
commercial known as Texas Musicians.
In
addition to performing her own compositions, Connie
enjoys performing music from Bonnie Raitt, Radney
Foster, Kim Richey, Joni Mitchell and other well-known
and not so well-known songwriters.
Matt
Harlan: Matt
Harlan is a songwriter's songwriter, composing
scenic landscapes and pointed statements disguised
as songs ... often non-linear, but always melodic.
Harlan's works confront social norms, celebrate
lives overlooked, or just wax poetic about coffee
and bus-stops. Whatever the inspiration, the music
is always heartfelt and genuine. Matt took First
Place in the 2006 American Songwriter Lyric Contest
for his song "Waiting For Godot." His
debut CD, Live and Rambling, will
be available at the show.
Jeff
Hoofard: Jeff
has been playing drums for local and national
acts since 1986 sharing the stage with such icons
as Bo Diddley and Chubby Checker as well as some
of Texas best acoustic artists. He has been
the percussionist of choice on several recording
projects and is currently playing with Willie
B & The Silverbacks. Jeff
is our "house" percussionist.
Michael
Pope: Co-founder and co-host of this showcase,
Michael has been writing songs for a few years
now. Many of his original's are open tuned, 5
finger picking, folk jazz instrumentals, but his
lyrics are strong and reflect his life's experiences.
Michael has one CD to his credit so far.
Willie
B: Willie describes himself as a bluesy guitar
player, but he is so much more. He is a gifted
and diverse guitar player who writes and performs
in many musical genres. Willie writes and sings
songs around the people in his life. He has been
a past recipient of HFBSA's
"Song
of the Year" and "Songwriter of the
Year". Willie has recorded four albums to
date and is currently working on his fifth solo
project.
The
Texas Songwriters' Showcase is
the
longest running showcase in Houston. These songwriters
will take to the stage to entertain you with colossal
musical talent and wide-ranging
experience ... you
will not be disappointed.

porterdavis
Underneath
the feel-good grooves, the expressive and honest
lyrics, and the smooth 3-part harmonies, porterdavis'
music is founded on a deep appreciation for
their musical roots. Before every performance,
Dan Barrett, Mike Meadows, and Simon Wallace
will
|
|
toast
to the show, and pour a sip on the floor in reverence
to the musical heroes who have come before them.
This is a tradition Dan and Mike picked up during
their studies in Ghana, West Africa in 2004.
Chances
are you will be gripped by Mikes innovative
and unique choice of Brazilian and African percussion
instruments, which he uses to help create the
porterdavis sound. They include ankle bells, caxixi
from Ghana, hadjira, tambourine, maracas from
Venezuela, a "big bass" cajon, metal
spoons, wooden spoons, various shakers, 16 inch
tar (North African hand drum) with one or two
brushes, kalimba on 14 inch tar, and a vibraslap.
Simon
joined the band after Dan and Mike had moved their
home base to Austin, TX in 2004. He hails from
the United Kingdom where he spent his formative
years playing blues harmonica landing the
National Blues Harmonica Title at the age of 17.
Simon solidified the roots/ blues sound of porterdavis,
by adding a third harmony and of course the evocative
sound of the harp.
The
porterdavis experience is a plate of some slow-cooked
musical soul food with a pint of your favorite
beverage. This is roots music from the heart,
aimed to move the body and soothe the spirit.
The guys finish many of their shows with Blind
Boy Fullers classic Custard Pie.
The chorus calls for the band and the crowd to
shout, Give me some of it! These words
crystallize a band hungry to stomp out some true
blue music, and their fans desire to receive
it. Like your favorite watering hole, and your
favorite bbq, porterdavis is the place youll
go to get it simple, raw, and feeling alright.

Opie
Hendrix
Awarded as Best Roots Rock/Rockabilly
artist at the 2003 Houston Press Music Awards, Opie
won the award again in 2004 and was nominated again
in 2005 and 2006. His musical well runs too deep
for him to be easily pigeonholed. Renowned throughout
the Lone Star State, he has established a considerable
following in the Texas music market as an electrical
live performer and a highly acclaimed songwriter.
Opie has built a solid repertoire, and a reputation
for his shear audacity and the good time he generates
everywhere he goes ... Opie Hendrix is a soul shaker.
He plays from the heart, not a set list, so whether
you're a redneck or a Deadhead, a punker or a biker,
a working stiff or an undergrad, a churchgoer or
a barhopper, you'll find something to dig in the
Opie Hendrix experience. An
intelligent songwriter, brilliant musician and master
showman, he possesses an unbridled passion that
is rare in todays music.

"Dude

..."
~ Houston

"One
source described his music as 'Willie Nelson
meets Elvis Costello;' pretty accurate, but
even that can't sum up the wealth of talent
in this tunester. Opie's song writing takes
tradition and distorts it into innovation."
