The
Moe Hansum Band

This 4-member band,
hailing from Houston, Texas, performs Americana
music with a strong emphasis on traditional acoustic
blues. Their Texas-bred music |
|
|
blends folk blues with a splash
of the soul and rhythm of the Mississippi Delta blues.
In concert the band presents a variety of their original
tunes, complemented by little-known covers from artists
such as Bukka White, Robert Johnson and Jimmy Reed. The
Moe Hansum Band has been together in many incarnations
since the early 1990's.
The instrumentation currently consists of two acoustic
and resonator guitarists, Mike Durbin and Chuck
Schwarz, upright acoustic bassist Sandy Buller and
drummer Stephan B. Miller. They have performed at
the Kerrville Folk Festival and many other locations
across Texas. This band of exceptionally talented
musicians is always a JP Hops House favorite. Moe's
music can be healing and therapeutic for those longing
for an authentic voice in traditional and modern
folk blues.

Jon
Hogan & Maria Moss
Think Woody Guthrie meets Townes Van Zandt and
the Carter Family to pick guitar with Kurt Cobain.
Singer/songwriter Jon Hogan blends a 1930s progressive
sensibility with the soulful backbone of old-time
Appalachia and the gut-wrenching howl of the
itinerant, freethinking cosmic refugee. Hogan's
writing careens through unexpected topics and
spot-on social commentary, backed by a swinging'
upright bass and fingerpickin' guitars. Mix
in a little bluegrass, a little Eastern Europe
and scorching vocals, and you get an acoustic-rock
delivery that's sometimes understated, often
downright intense. Listeners who care about
hand-made, visionary folk art will get him completely.
Check back soon for details on Maria.
Open the show tonight is qanda.

Some of the best singer
songwriters from around the state of Texas grace
the JPHH stage on the second Friday of each month.
The featured artists for this evening's showcase
will be Robert Frith.
 |
Robert Frith: Singer-songwriter Robert Frith has earned a great deal of critical acclaimed for his outstanding original music and electrifying stage shows. Robert was named the 2010, plus 2007 and 2008, TMA Texas Singer/Songwriter of the Year. He was also nominated in 2010 for Producer of The Year and past nominations include Entertainer of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, and Song of the Year. Additionally, Robert has won the prestigious Wildflower! Arts and Music Festival’s Singer/Songwriter Competition, was a finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival’s “New Folk” event, and in 2007 he was chosen out of 30,000 contestants as a regional finalist for USA Networks “Nashville Star” television show. Most recently country music star Mark Chesnutt recorded a song Robert co-wrote for the movie Noble Things. This man is an exceptional songwriter and stageperformer.
 |

he is so much more. He is a gifted and diverse
guitar player who writes and performs in many
musical genres. Willie writes and sings songs
around the people in his life. He has been a past

Steve
Brooks
Cross two famous guys named Brooks - Garth and
Mel - and you get Austin folksinger Steve Brooks.
He's got a song for every occasion, from the sublime
to the ridiculous and back. His tunes range from
comic commentary and crackerbarrel philosophy
to lyrical love ballads and sharp-edged snapshots
of Texas and the world.
Think you know
him as jester and political satirist? Get ready
for another side of Steve Brooks. From poetic
love songs to toe-tapping two-steppers, hear Steve
as youve never heard him before.
Matt Harlan is
a songwriter's songwriter, composing scenic
landscapes and pointed statements disguised
as songs ... often non-linear, but always melodic.
Harlan's works confront social norms, celebrate
lives overlooked, or just wax poetic about coffee
and bus-stops. Whatever the inspiration, the
music is always heartfelt and genuine. Matt
took First Place in the 2006 American Songwriter
Lyric Contest for his song "Waiting For
Godot."
He has just returned from his first ever European tour.

The
Big Lizard Band
(MEAN JOE TURNER IS BACK!)
True to the tradition of
change, the Big Lizard Boys have morphed into
the Big Lizard Band. The trio has become a five-some.
For almost seven years, your hardy band of adventurers
(Aspinwall, Crippen & Darnell) have plucked,
strummed, frailed, hammered, pulled and slid all
of the fretted terrain from handmade, homegrown
songs to traditional and cover tunes, blending
blues, folk, rock, americana, history and gospel
into their own version of soul grass.
And now, with the addition
of vocalist Lisa Canida,
the Big Lizard Band is venturing into new musical
territories, while keeping the best of their ancient
rituals. Acoustic, amplified, supersonic and French-fried,
the Big Lizard Band is ready to take you for a
ride - so grab your hats, MEAN JOE TURNER IS BACK!
(
and if you don't know what that means,
you need to find out
).

Jiminy Crisket
If you like songs that will make you laugh and instrumentation that will make your ears grin, you should give Jiminy Crisket a listen. This husband and wife duo from the Austin area make it their mission to hand-craft songs that will make you smile! |
|
 |
Jiminy Crisket brings a mix of fancy guitar playing, clever lyrics, vocal harmonies, entertaining on-stage banter, and humor to every performance. The husband and wife duo sings covers and original songs, often funny stories about everything from an internet date gone wrong, to devilish love songs, to wedding vows that will make you laugh and cry all at once. Their style will start with overtones of Chet Atkins and migrate to country licks reminiscent Johnny Cash and take a turn toward beautiful, classically inspired melodies. They love to play a variety of music and keep their audience engaged with interesting musical changes from song to song, funny stories, and just plain good instrumentation.
Come on out and welcome Jiminy Crisket to JPHH for their first performance on our stage.
