The
Moe Hansum Band

This 4-member band,
hailing from Houston, Texas, performs Americana
music with a strong emphasis on traditional acoustic
blues. Their Texas-bred music
|
|
|
blends folk blues with a splash
of the soul and rhythm of the Mississippi Delta blues.
In concert the band presents a variety of their original
tunes, complemented by little-known covers from artists
such as Bukka White, Robert Johnson and Jimmy Reed. The
Moe Hansum Band has been together in many incarnations
since the early 1990's.
The instrumentation currently consists of two acoustic
and resonator guitarists, Mike Durbin and Chuck
Schwarz, upright acoustic bassist Sandy Buller and
drummer Stephan B. Miller. They have performed at
the Kerrville Folk Festival and many other locations
across Texas. This band of exceptionally talented
musicians is always a JP Hops House favorite. Moe's
music can be healing and therapeutic for those longing
for an authentic voice in traditional and modern
folk blues.

Susan
Gibson

Susan
Gibson is always happiest on the move.
Even though she's settled into a home in the Texas
Hill Country, she still puts upwards of 60,000
miles a year on her customized freightliner van.
Her 2005 release, Outer Space,
included a live version of her song "Wide
Open Spaces" which the Dixie Chicks propelled
into one of the all-time best-selling country
songs.
Susan's claim to fame is
her songwriting. Her passion whispers and roars.
Her songs are natural pearls - grains of truth
at the core, wrapped in silken melodies, and gritty
enough on the surface to guarantee authenticity.
Susan grabbed honors as
winner of the 1998 CMA "Single of the Year"
and a Grammy nomination for writing "Wide
Open Spaces," title track of Dixie Chicks'
multi-platinum Grammy Award winning album.
Joining Susan onstage this
evening will be the fantastic fiddle player Marian
Brackney.

Texas Songwriter Showcase
Some of the best singer
songwriters from around the state of Texas grace
the JPHH stage on the second Friday of each month.
The featured artists for this evening's showcase
are Annie
Benjamin and Mitch Tiffin.
Annie Benjamin:
Annie is a veteran of the live music scene in
Texas with over two decades of performances to
her credit. She is known for her high energy flute
licks, her multi-register vocal ability, and a
very unique picking style on her guitar. Her lyrics
can be irreverant and silly one minute, poignantly
homespun the next.
Mitch Tiffin:
Mitch Tiffin is a local
Houston singer - songwriter with a long history
in the music business. A while back he wandered
out of his garage, which he fondly refers to as
his studio, and started playing the local open
mics. His songs are mostly a mix of County, Folk,
and Blues, but with his own special spice. Whatever
Mitch brings, originals or covers, you can be
sure that his songs will get inside your head
and your heart.
Willie B: Willie
describes himself as a bluesy guitar player, but
he is so much more. He is a gifted and diverse
guitar player who writes and performs in many
musical genres. Willie writes and sings songs
around the people in his life. He has been a past
recipient of HFBSA's "Song of the Year"
and "Songwriter of the Year". Willie
has recorded four albums to date and is currently
working on his fifth solo project.
The Texas Songwriters' Showcase
is the longest running showcase in Houston. These
songwriters will take to the stage to entertain
you with colossal musical talent and wide-ranging
experience ... you will not be disappointed.

White
Beets with Special Guest Ron Welch
Mark
Beets and Saylor
White ,
two of the Houston area's most esteemed singer
songwriters, have joined forces to become the
White Beets. To their honor thus far, the duo
was a winner at the Songwriters Serenade in 2009;
individually Beets and White have each released
award winning CDs, plus both have penned songs
recorded by other artists.
On this night the White
Beets will be joined by a few very special guests
including Ron Welch and Kenyon White, two of the
best lead acoustic players in our neck of the
woods. Also joining the White Beets will be Jeff
Hoofard working his percussive magic on stage
before your very eyes. It will be a mix and match
night ... individual performances, duos, and full
group numbers.
Do join us ... it should
be a night of fun, if the Grinch does not find
us.

Jon
Hogan
Band Family
Christmas Jam and Potluck Party
Think Woody Guthrie meets Townes Van Zandt and
the Carter Family to pick guitar with Kurt Cobain.
Singer/songwriter Jon Hogan blends a 1930s Progressive
sensibility with the soulful backbone of old-time
Appalachia and the gut-wrenching howl of the
itinerant, freethinking cosmic refugee. Hogan's
writing careens through unexpected topics and
spot-on social commentary, backed by a swinging'
upright bass and fingerpickin' guitars. Mix
in a little bluegrass, a little Eastern Europe
and scorching vocals, and you get an acoustic-rock
delivery that's sometimes understated, often
downright intense. Listeners who care about
hand-made, visionary folk art will get him completely.
Band personnel this evening is composed of Jon
Hogan on guitar and vocals, Maria Moss on guitar
and Ned Mefford on bass.
Please share in the Christmas spirit and bring
something for the buffet.

Twilight
Hotel
Hailing from the fertile
music community of Winnipeg, MB, Zdan &
Quanbury met in 2002 at a folk festival and
realized the power of combining their talents.
|
|
|
Twilight
Hotel have been compared to memorable folk duos
because they radiate that certain elusive chemistry
that can only come from two people in love singing
together. Couples that make music together rarely
find harmony in their relationships; Zdan and
Quanbury are hoping to buck the trend with their
personal and musical partnership in Twilight
Hotel.
Constant touring in North
America & Europe continue to bolster the
duos profile. In 2007/2008 they played
over 250 North American/Europe tour dates. Performance
highlights for 2008 include Trafalger Square
in London, England for the Canada Day Celebrations,
mainstage at the infamous Kerville Folk Festival
in Kerville, TX, and the Bremenale Festival
in Bremen, Germany.
Twilight Hotel has teamed
up with producer Colin Linden to record, Highway
Prayer, the follow up album to
their critically acclaimed 2006 release Bethune
(nominated Best Americana Album at the 2007
American Independent Music Awards). Highway
Prayer continues the duo's provocative
love story showcasing their characteristic dark
twang and noir cabaret all the while centered
around their rich vocal harmonies.
"Twilight Hotel, a most
winning pair. Dave and Brandy are not only musically
talented and engaging, but they are innovative,
fresh and original. They somehow manage to blend
a Parisian cabaret sound, vintage rock, country
and their original style into one cohesive,
highly entertaining sound. I doubt they'll be
playing small clubs much longer." ~ Rich Warren,
WFMT Chicago
This is the hottest couple
to join musical voices in years. The aptly titled
band of two presents dark, road songs that sizzle
on and seduce off stage. Two guitars or a guitar
accompanied by accordion, two rich vocals, two
composer-lyricists: Twilight Hotel fills a whole
band's bill with only two members.
