DECEMBER 2005

December 2, 2005 - Friday
Shake Russell

From Bar Harbor, Maine to Santa Fe, New Mexico; from Los Angeles, California to Nashville, Tennessee, one can mention among Texas songwriters, the name “Shake Russell” and be virtually assured of interest, pleasure and joyful recognition.
If you’re a true Texan, then Shake Russell’s music has touched your life in some way. If you’re not, it happened without your knowing it. Seventeen million copies of this Texan’s songs have been bought while being recorded by the likes of Clint Black, Ricky Skaggs, Waylon Jennings, and others. We are always thrilled when Shake chooses to play our humble establishment. Please help us to welcome the legendary Texas singer songwriter's return to the stage at JP Hops House and join us for what promises to be another great "shakin" show.

Texas Songwriters' Showcase
Some of the best singer songwriters from around the state of Texas grace the JPHH stage on
the second Friday of each month. The December showcase features Bill Cabrera and Zed Daniels.
Bill Cabrera: The first song he wrote took first place in a songfest at Santa Clara University in 1969. His first CD, Lahaina Nights, was recorded in Maui with friends Norton Buffalo (Steve Miller Band) and Stu Blank (Van Morrison). Bill is currently co-hosting the HAAM radio show every Monday.
Zed Daniels: His catchy and provocative compositions tap into the soul, covering the lighter and darker sides of life. Zed's message is honest and hopeful, one that will stick with you and make you think and feel from a different perspective. All you have to do is listen. He'll pull you in and keep you there with him...
Michael Pope: Co-founder and co-host of this showcase, Michael has been writing songs for a couple years now. Many of his original's are open tuned, 5 finger picking, folk jazz instrumentals, and his lyrics are strong, reflecting his life's experiences. Michael is currently recording his debut album.
Willie B: Willie describes himself as a bluesy guitar player, but he is so much more. He is a gifted and diverse guitar player who writes and performs in many musical genres. Willie writes and sings songs around the people in his life. He has won "Song of the Year" and "Songwriter of the Year" in HFBSA. Willie has recorded four albums to date.
The Texas Songwriters' Showcase always fills the stage with vast musical experience, guaranteeing that the show will be an exhilarating musical phenomenon! Come experience the phenom!

Susan Gibson & Jack Saunders

Susan Gibson is happiest on the move, putting upwards of 60,000 miles a year on her van, and her latest journey is OuterSpace. That's the name of her latest CD which stretches her musical boundaries and is the edgiest work she's ever done. The new recording includes a live version of her song "Wide Open Spaces" which Dixie Chicks propelled into one of the all-time best-selling country songs.
Susan's claim to fame is her songwriting. Her passion whispers and roars. Her songs are natural pearls - grains of truth at the core, wrapped in silken melodies, and gritty enough on the surface to guarantee authenticity.
Susan grabbed honors as winner of the 1998 CMA "Single of the Year" and a Grammy nomination for writing "Wide Open Spaces," title track of Dixie Chicks' multi-platinum Grammy Award winning album.
Jack Saunders has been a part of the Texas music scene since the 70’s. In recent years Jack has garnered Best Acoustic Honors from the Houston Press Music Awards; in 1998, 1999 and 2001, plus he was nominated in multiple categories, and won the 2000 "Critic's Choice" award for overall excellence in writing and performance. Besides his live performances, Jack owns the successful White Cat Recording Studio.
"The good writers are storytellers. They’ve got a good eye for detail and a gift for language. Jack Saunders is at that level. It’s in the little details; [His are] songs that any tunesmith would be proud to have written. No doubt about it: this is a major league songwriter." ~ Inside Houston

CADE
After umpteen years of party jamming, these four long-time friends wondered what would happen if they actually put some effort into it. They had four rehearsals and debuted on New Year's Eve 2004/5 at Anderson Fair.
Bill Cade has been a fixture in the Houston music scene for nearly 40 years. He has played with, opened for and befriended musicians so notable they don't need last names: Townes, Wrecks, Lyle, Guy, Shake, Nanci, Lightnin'. He could get by on the strength of his velvet voice alone, but his skills as a songwriter, guitarist, bass player and showman have built his reputation among the cognocente.
Bill is backed by three friends who, while playing in their own respective bands, used to chime in as the informal audience chorus at Bill's shows. Steve Baker and Sherry R. played as Rebels Without Applause for nine years. Franci Jarrard played with the Europa Trio, Los Romanceros and Troika.
As CADE, the group is known for their four-part harmonies and instrument swapping. The bass is passed around when Franci switches to piano, or Steve picks up the Cajun accordion, electric guitar or melodica. Sherry plays mandolin and percussion instruments.
The CADE songlist is a blend of Bill's original tunes and classic favorites, enhanced by the varied selections of Steve, Franci and Sherry. From punchy blues to rockin' zydeco to classic 40's swing, there's something for everyone.
Tonight marks the debut performance by CADE at JP Hops House ... we hope only the first of many.
