George
Ensle
George Ensle, (pronounced
Enslee), began songwriting and performing as
a teenager in the late sixties in his hometown,
Houston at such venerable clubs as the Sand
Mountain Coffeehouse and the original Old Quarter,
sharing stages with legendary folk greats, Townes
Van Zandt, Guy Clark, and Jerry Jeff Walker.
While touring the club, college coffeehouse
and festival circuit, he was awarded a prestigious
Federal Government Grant to be an Artist-In-Schools,
teaching songwriting and the creative process
to elementary schoolchildren. George has won
|
|
|
songwriting awards from The American Song Festival,
the Kerrville Folk Festival, the Music Umbrella,
and the Austin Songwriters Group, and has released
five albums in the U.S. and Europe. In 2008 he
was nominated for Singer/Songwriter of the Year
by the Texas Music Academy.
George has a unique fingerpicking
style originating from his classical guitar training
and honed over the years to flow seamlessly with
his lyrics. He has been called a "songpainter,"
capturing "lifescapes", with storysong
portraits of "real people making it in the
real world." |

David Lutes Trio
CD Release Party
David Lutes brings his unique blend of Americana,
folk and pop performance to JP Hops House tonight.
The Austin-based singer-songwriter is playing
behind his latest release Big Top
from which he has received high critical acclaim.
The Daily Texan calls the record "...the
music that actually makes it worth your time
to listen to all these free [promotional] discs,"
and Austin.com's Nichole Wagner praises Big
Top as "flashy and dangerous, with
room for the occasional flare of the unexpected."
Lutes also garnered praise from the 2009 Texas
Music Awards with nominations for "Song
of the Year" and "Male Vocalist of
the Year," which included a feature performance
at the ceremony.
Lutes' genre-bending mix of folk and pop stays
true to his Americana roots and songwriting
... with explorations into spirited pop-rock.

Tim Henderson
was born in the coal country of West Virginia
and raised in Nitro and Charleston, along with
five brothers and a sister. He is considered by
many to be one of Americas outstanding folk
song writers.
Musically, his Grandma quilled
the mountain dulcimer and sang songs that have
been in those mountains since they left Scotland
and Wales in the 1700s. His mother played classical
piano. Tim played the piano
|
|
|
from age 9. He was given his
first guitar at age 14 by Robert Easley, the black
janitor at his school. Imagine Tim's shock when
he brought it home and his Grandpa grabbed it and
played Over the Waves, the old circus
song. Tim was singing You Are My Sunshine
for crowds of strangers when he was two.
Tim has tried to play nearly
everything with strings, including a 19-string lute.
He considers his playing adequate, but says that
you must judge for yourself. In performing, he uses
a guitar that he bought from the designer in Spain
in 1965. It is a gut string classical guitar with
a flamenco neck. Tim says, I would sooner
part with my right arm. As a vocalist, I can only
tell you that I enunciate well and sing only marginally
better than Willie Nelson, and maybe a little louder.
Tom Paxton calls Tim The
bear who laughs
Loud.

Texas Songwriter Showcase
Some of the best singer
songwriters from around the state of Texas grace
the JPHH stage on the second Friday of each month.
Charm School
is the featured ensemble
for this evening's showcase .
Slinging guitars and packing
a jazzy rendition of classic rock, originals and
foot stomping blues, Charm School is a harmonic
trio of Texas gals your momma warned you about.
Kat Drake is on lead
guitar, jaw-harp and vocals. A Texas native and
Houston area musician for over 35 years, she is
inspired by money, fast cars and First Lady of
Bass, Carol Kaye.
Lorinda Robb is on
rhythm guitar and vocals. Another Texas native
playing music publicly for over 30 years, she
is influenced by Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello
and homemade cobbler.
Jana Arent is on
bass, keyboards and vocals. A Blue Lake Fine Arts
Alumni with her roots now firmly transplanted
in Longhorn country, she is inspired by Patti
Sullivan, Marianne Faithful and Jean Armatrading.
Willie B: Willie
describes himself as a bluesy guitar player, but
he is so much more. He is a gifted and diverse
guitar player who writes and performs in many
musical genres. Willie writes and sings songs
around the people in his life. He has been a past
recipient of HFBSA's "Song of the Year"
and "Songwriter of the Year". Willie
has recorded four albums to date and is currently
working on his fifth solo project.
The Texas Songwriters' Showcase
is the longest running showcase in Houston. These
songwriters will take to the stage to entertain
you with colossal musical talent and wide-ranging
experience ... you will not be disappointed.

Rick
Poss, Mike
Darnell, Mark
Beets & Saylor
White
Rick Poss reports
seeing "A Hard Day's Night" as a child,
and later meeting Mance Lipscomb, Lightnin' Hopkins,
and Jimmy Reed, as key inspirations and influences.
He has been writing
songs since he learned his first chord, fronted
his own bands and worked extensively in the United
States and Europe with Alejandro Escovedo, Jimmy
LaFave, Jack Saunders, Jim Lauderdale, Greg Trooper,
and Bruce Robison. Rick has opened shows for Mance
Lipscomb, Buddy Miller, Bo Diddley, Lucinda Williams,
Son Volt, Waylon Jennings, Billy Bragg, Robert
Cray, and Ben Harper among others.
Mark Beets
has a sound which has been called "Organic
Americana". It's fresh, different from most
of the stuff out there today. In 2003 Long
Ago & Many Days, Mark's debut
collection of songs, was produced by White Cat
Productions and Beets was a finalist in the Wildflower
Festival songwriting competition. Mark's song
"The Road's Not Long Enough" was selected as the
lead single on The Houston Association of Acoustic
Musicians' first compilation CD.
East Texas born writer of
songs, poetry and short stories, Saylor White
has written over two thousand songs in his better
than thirty years of word crafting, including
"Dress of Lace" recorded and performed
by Nanci Griffith and Lyle Lovett. Saylor is an
amazing and prolific songwriter with a musical
sense that comes as natural to him as breathing.
He is co-owner of A
Songwriters Studio in Houston, Texas.
Details on Mike to be posted
soon.
