Opie Hendrix & Carrie Ann Buchanan
emptypixel
We are excited to have Opie and Carrie appearing on stage tonight as a husband and wife acoustic duo.
emptypixel
Carrie Ann's songwriting style reflects her varied influences ... growing up in the mid-West, learning to play music in church, being married to Houstons own roots rocker Opie Hendrix and being a mother. Carrie Ann Buchanan may have the best pure vocal tone in Houston ... her voice is truly an expressive instrument. It soars, it rolls, it swings and dives, melding an obvious jazz influence with a roots rock soul. Carrie Ann also fronts her own band, Carrie Ann and the Apocalyptics.
emptypixel
Opie Hendrix draws a little from rock & roll, Texas country, down-home blues and Americana roots musics. In addition to writing and recording his music, Opie Hendrix has over 300 classic standard songs in his forever growing repertoire.  The 2003 release San Jacinto was rated in the Top 10 CD's of 2003 by the Houston Press, and from that album, "My Favorite Waitress" was nominated HMPA "Song of the Year"  His latest, Chupacabra, rated in the Top 10 CD's of 2006.  In 2004 he was again a Houston Press Music Award winner. Opie also fronts his own band, Opie Hendrix and the Texas Tallboys.

This will be a great show with two of Houston's best and most energetic entertainers! A very special acoustic evening with Opie and Carrie Ann.

Sweet Mama Cotton & the Sugar Daddies
emptypixels
Tonight we again welcome to our stage ~ musician ~ singer ~ songwriter ~ comedienne ~ Marcy Rae, alias Sweet Mama Cotton. Some of Marcy’s material is parody; she combines her blues talent with comedy in her performances.
emptypixels
Marcy’s musical interests are diverse, but all these influences have combined to produce a musical approach that is inclusive of all
Sweet Mama Cotton
forms of music. Her blues repertoire includes standards such as “Stormy Monday” and “Down Home Blues”, as well as classics from the jazz/blues era of Bessie Smith and Sippie Wallace. She also rocks out on Chuck Berry style tunes and some funky dance tunes like “Shaky Ground”. Her diverse background has expanded her repertoire to include classic standards, folk, rock, and country music as well as blues. Mixed in with the wide variety of cover material is a healthy dose of her original music.
emptypixels
Since her professional debut as a musician, she has played on bills with Ray Campi and the Rebels, Jackson Browne, The Blasters, Blood Sweat and Tears, and Rose Maddox. Marcy also spent some time as keyboard player for The Drifters on a tour through the South.
emptypixels
While living in Houston, Marcy has shared the stage with many of the Blues Legends of Texas, including Pete Mayes, Texas Johnny Brown, Trudy Lynn, Lavelle White, Jimmy “T-99” Nelson, Oscar Perry, Clarence Holliman, Carol Fran, Earl Gilliam, Grady Gaines, Trudy Lynn, Carolyn Blanchard, and Mark May. She has also been invited to perform with Bob Margolin and Pinetop Perkins on several occasions, and at the all-star jam band at the W.C. Handy Awards.

Marcy Rae, aka Sweet Mama Cotton, presents a confident statement of affirming blues. As her “motto” states, Marcy plays “new Texas blues with respect for tradition”.

Texas Songwriter Showcase
Some of the best singer songwriters from around the state of Texas grace the JPHH stage on the second Friday of each month. The featured artists for this evening's showcase are Annie Benjamin and Patti Sullivan.
emptypixels
Annie Benjamin: Annie is a veteran of the live music scene in Texas with over two decades of performances to her credit. She is known for her high energy flute licks, her multi-register vocal ability, and a very unique picking style on her guitar. Her lyrics can be irreverant and silly one minute, poignantly homespun the next.
emptypixels
Patti Sullivan: This singer songwriter, a child of the sixties, resides in Cut and Shoot and performs nationwide as a solo artist or with a small combo. Patti's eclectic song-bag includes elements of country, folk, jazz and blues. She has released two CDs and is now working on her third which she plans to record live.
Willie B: Willie describes himself as a bluesy guitar player, but he is so much more. He is a gifted and diverse guitar player who writes and performs in many musical genres. Willie writes and sings songs around the people in his life. He has been a past recipient of HFBSA's "Song of the Year" and "Songwriter of the Year". Willie has recorded four albums to date and is currently working on his fifth solo project.
The Texas Songwriters' Showcase is the longest running showcase in Houston. These songwriters will take to the stage to entertain you with colossal musical talent and wide-ranging experience ... you will not be disappointed.

Jimmy George and Russell Clepper, both long time residents of Austin, have been performing together since the spring of 2005, releasing three independent CD’s including their latest, Broken Sand Dollars.

to and Lubbock had the scene and the scenery that inspired me to go for it.” His songwriting style grew from an early love of folk, bluegrass and gospel, and later drew from songwriters such as John Prine, Butch Hancock, Joe Ely and Billy Joe Shaver. He first performed his original music in Lubbock as a member of a folk/rock trio that included local songwriter, hobo hero and cowboy, Eddie Beethoven.
emptypixels
George developed his own sound, taking inspiration from the likes of Robert Fripp, Adrian Ballew, Jeff Beck plus other progressive and experimental rockers, as well as songwriters such as Leonard Cohen and Bruce Coburn. The years since have seen him take up the acoustic guitar and open for acts like Santana, the California Guitar Trio and Tom Petty. In Austin, he has a long series of notches in his music belt, including a stint with the Asylum Street Spankers and Weird Cousin. Currently, he is one of the top session players at Lava Studios and just finished doing some of the recording and most of the mastering in his own studio for David Rodriguez’ latest effort, Constant War.

The duo Clepper George brings these widely divergent musical backgrounds together to forge a unique, powerful, new acoustic sound that features rich guitar tapestries and tight vocal harmonies.
