Susan Gibson

Susan Gibson is happiest on the move, putting upwards of

60,000 miles a year on her van, and her latest journey is OuterSpace. That's the name of her latest CD which stretches her musical boundaries and is the edgiest work she's ever done. The new recording includes a live version of her song "Wide Open Spaces" which the Dixie Chicks propelled into one of the all-time best-selling country songs.

Susan's claim to fame is her songwriting. Her passion whispers and roars. Her songs are natural pearls - grains of truth at the core, wrapped in silken melodies, and gritty enough on the surface to guarantee authenticity.
Susan grabbed honors as winner of the 1998 CMA "Single of the Year" and a Grammy nomination for writing "Wide Open Spaces," title track of Dixie Chicks' multi-platinum Grammy Award winning album.
Sharing the bill with Susan this evening will be the popular Houston duo, Smythe & Taylor. Plus, Brett Mouton will provide an opening set.

Mark Beets Band
Mark has a sound which has been called "Organic Americana". According to Ken Gaines, fellow musician, "Mark's music will sneak up on you. One minute you're listening politely and the next minute you're either laughing or crying your eyes out." It's fresh, different from most of the stuff out there today. Long Ago & Many Days, Mark's debut collection of songs, was produced by White Cat Productions.

Texas Songwriter Showcase
Some of the best singer songwriters from around the state of Texas grace the JPHH stage on
the second Friday of each month. The featured artists for this evening's showcase are Annie Benjamin and Patti Sullivan.
Annie Benjamin: Annie is a veteran of the live music scene in Texas with over two decades of performances to her credit. She is known for her high energy flute licks, her multi-register vocal ability, and a very unique picking style on her guitar. Her lyrics can be irreverant and silly one minute, poignantly homespun the next.
Patti Sullivan: This singer songwriter, a child of the sixties, resides in Cut and Shoot and performs nationwide as a solo artist or with a small combo. Patti's eclectic song-bag includes elements of country, folk, jazz and blues. She has released two CDs and is now working on her third which she plans to record live.
Michael Pope: Co-founder and co-host of this showcase, Michael has been writing songs for a few years now. Many of his original's are open tuned, 5 finger picking, folk jazz instrumentals, but his lyrics are strong and reflect his life's experiences. Michael has one CD to his credit so far.
Willie B: Willie describes himself as a bluesy guitar player, but he is so much more. He is a gifted and diverse guitar player who writes and performs in many musical genres. Willie writes and sings songs around the people in his life. He has been a past recipient of HFBSA's "Song of the Year" and "Songwriter of the Year". Willie has recorded four albums to date and is currently working on his fifth solo project.
The Texas Songwriters' Showcase is the longest running showcase in Houston. These songwriters will take to the stage to entertain you with colossal musical talent and wide-ranging experience ... you will not be disappointed.

Chelsea Miller, Kenyon White, Matt Harlan,
Corey Butler
& Mighty Orq
Chelsea Miller: "I am a musician from the heart ... i grew up with music in my life ... I play my own instruments (piano and guitar) ... i sing my own lyrics and harmonies ... I write my own songs... I have recorded everything by myself or with Kenyon Saylor White (until recently) ... (for the most part) i express my emotions through music ... I am a musician in every sense of the word ... and will always be ..." Chelsea was recently awarded 'Grand Honors' for female songwriter at Texas Stars and Guitars Fest 2007.
Kenyon White is a young guitar phenom, as well as a gifted artist, sculptor, singer and writer.
"I believe if you write from the heart, work really hard for what you want, and are at least decently talented you will succeed with or without todays music industry. People want to hear good songs they can connect to." ~ Kenyon

Matt Harlan is a songwriter's songwriter, composing scenic landscapes and pointed statements disguised as songs ... often non-linear, but always melodic. Matt took First Place in the 2006 American Songwriter Lyric Contest for his song "Waiting For Godot." His debut CD, Live and Rambling, will be available at the show.
Corey Butler, a Houston singer songwriter has been playing and writing music since the age of 15. Though originally from Boston this musician's playing style was greatly affected by a childhood spent in Mexico City. Corey has developed an original music style we are sure you will find refreshing.
Mighty Orq, front man to the band of the same name, has three years of extensive touring with the Tony Vega band, including two European tours and two Houston Press Music Awards, to his credit. He has also released a solo all acoustic CD, Prayer Book.

Ken Gaines & Wayne Wilkerson & Bill Ward

On stage tonight ... three very talented, popular entertainers who have been around the block a few times. They are each well known in the Texas music scene as powerful singers and creative, prolific songwriters of the magic we call music!
Ken Gaines has "a beautifully clear voice and articulate guitar accompaniment." His lyrics are both powerful and poetic and highlight his skills as a story teller and observer of life. Ken's latest CD, Catfish Moon, recorded at Songdog Records and co-produced by Bill Ward, has been selling like hotcakes. He was the recipient in 2005 for the Texas Music Awards - Singer/Songwriter of the Year and the My Texan Award. He's a proud member of MyTexasMusic.com.
Wayne Wilkerson is a guitar wizard for sure ... artful mastery of the strings. His incredible skills on the guitar makes him a truly amazing lead player. Along with tasteful guitar licks, you can hear Wayne's smooth harmonies.
Bill Ward's personal background is as diverse as the number of instruments he plays; Bill is a marathon man of music. He has a blues-inflected baritone voice, crystal clear enunciation and incredible vocal command. Bill captures the hearts and minds of his listeners time and time again with his dynamic stage presence, gripping prose and unforgettable melodies present in every song. He is incredible!
You will not want these guys to stop playing at the end of the night. This show is highly recommended!
