Kacey
Jones
Best
known for her work in Ethel and The Shamless Hussies
and comedic albums including Men Are Some of
My Favorite People, Every Man I Love Is
Either Married, Gay or Dead, and The Sweet
Potato Queens Big-Ass Box of Music, it's obvious
Kacey has a gift for making people laugh ... including
Garrison Keillor, who twice invited her to perform
on A Prairie Home Companion. Proving her
talents could produce more than just a few good
laughs, Kacey entered the studio with legendary
cult artist Kinky Friedman and produced his critically
acclaimed project, Pearls in the Snow.
Kacey
is currently on tour in support of her latest
endeavour, Kacey Jones Sings Mickey Newbury,
on which she was compelled to pay tribute to her
songwriting hero.
| |
Mickey
Newbury was the wildcard in the songwriter
revolution in Nashville in the late 1960s
and early 70s. Newbury always wrote the
lyric you didn't expect, the one that hit
you straight in the heart, the one that
stopped you dead in your tracks. I'm gratified
that Kacey Jones is paying tribute to some
of Mickey's best songs and keeping them
alive and kicking.
~ Chet Flippo,
Billboard
Anyone
who pays tribute to the great Mickey Newbury
is a friend of mine. One of the most prolific
songwriters ever, his music will continue
to touch the emotions of generations to
come. Thank you Kacey. ~ Brenda Lee
Newbury's
fabled lush lyrics lend themselves to Jones'
lush musical interpretations. I'm not calling
either of them a lush - just a union made
in heaven. ~ Kinky Friedman
|
She will be performing tonight with accompaniment
on bass by
Eddie Dunbar. Opening for Kacey will be Michael
Marcoulier & Anthony
Klonaris.

Texas Songwriter Showcase
Some of the best singer songwriters from around
the state of Texas grace the JPHH stage on the
second Friday of each month.
Thus
far, Van Buccannon and Jim Flemming
are the featured artists for this evening's showcase.
Van
Buchanan: For quite a while now this native
Houstonian has been recognized for his witty
and melodic songs. Throughout the 1980s Van
honed his songwriting skills as he successfully
signed several songs to Mickey Gilley's label,
won awards in the American Song Festival and
the Music City Song Festival, plus had cuts
recorded by Cajun singer Don LaFleur, Al White
and others. More recently, Van was a member
of the local band the Bates Motel, and today
he's to be found performing all around
the greater Houston area.
Jim
Flemming:
His songs weld the elements of literate content
and expressive musical phrasing in a soulful and
emotive style, influenced by many musical genres
and inspired by the honesty of Lucinda Williams,
the contumacy of Steve Earle, the populism of
Bruce Springsteen, the sensitivity of Jackson
Browne, the poetry of Paul Simon, the angst of
REM and the grungeicana of Neil Young. His songs
are stories, they are love songs, they are upbeat,
"life-recovery" songs; they are political
commentary. And sometimes, well, they are just
downright hooked-filled catchy tunes.
Michael
Pope: Co-founder and co-host of this showcase,
Michael has been writing songs for a couple years
now. Many of his original's are open tuned, 5
finger picking, folk jazz instrumentals, but his
lyrics are strong and reflect his life's experiences.
Michael recently released his debut album.
Willie
B: Willie describes himself as a bluesy guitar
player, but he is so much more. He is a gifted
and diverse guitar player who writes and performs
in many musical genres. Willie writes and sings
songs around the people in his life. He has won
"Song of the Year" and "Songwriter
of the Year" in HFBSA. Willie has recorded
four albums to date.
The
Texas
Songwriters' Showcase
always fills the stage with vast musical experience,
guaranteeing that the show will be an exhilarating
musical phenomenon! Come experience the phenom!

Blake
and Fallon
Among
the myriad of artists who have emerged from Austin
in the last five years, few have generated more
excitement among fans, critics, and industry insiders
than Blake Powers & Fallon Franklin. Their
live shows seamlessly blend elements of singer/songwriter,
pop, rock, and blues genres. Formed in July of
2002, the band has already been recognized as
a bright, creative force in Americana music with
the release of their albums, Lines
and Red Lights. They appear poised
to assert themselves on the Pop and Rock scenes
as well.
Guitarist and vocalist Blake Powers is an accomplished
songwriter whose credits include being named a
finalist in the Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk
Category in 2002 and winning the distinguished
BW Stevenson songwriting award the same year.
Powers style evokes strong comparisons to classic
singer/songwriters like Van Morrison, Paul Simon,
James Taylor, and David Gray.
Joining Powers on vocal duties is Fallon Franklin.
Referred to by many in Austin as, simply, The
Voice, Franklin is a fast rising solo star
in her own right, and has the proud honor of being
the first solo act ever allowed to perform at
the University of Texass annual Spring Review.
Fallon has shared the stage with Asleep at the
Wheel, Vertical Horizon, Pat Green, Cory Morrow,
and The Great Divide, and her strong, soulful
voice invokes shades of Stevie Nicks and Sheryl
Crow.
The duo blends their acoustic rock roots with
contemporary jazz production choices and folk-influenced
lyricism to create an amazingly intelligent and
infectious product that critics are already hailing
with 4 star ratings. Help us give Blake and Fallon
a rousing welcome on their return to JP Hops House
with their full band.

Bob
Livingston
BOB LIVINGSTON has never been a traditional Texas
country musician living the honky-tonk life even
though he has spent more than his share of time
on the roadhouse circuit with some of Texas
most colorful musicians. Livingston moved to Austin
in 1971 with Michael Martin Murphey after they
had recorded the album Geronimos Cadillac
in Nashville for A&M Records. Austin was a
creative boom town whirling with excitement and
busting at the seams. The streets and clubs were
full of musicians, poets, artists and dancers.
It was paradise for a young man from Lubbock who
just played on a nationally released record. Livingston
hooked up with Jerry Jeff Walker, they toured
endlessly and put out some of Texas' quintessential
progressive country rock albums including the
1973 classic, Viva Terlingua!
 |
Livingston
was part of the "Interchangeable Band"
that played with Murphey, Walker and Ray Wylie
Hubbard among others, sometimes all on the same
show! In 1974, Livingston, Gary Nunn and John
Inmon decided to strike out on their own with
the Lost Gonzo Band and recorded two records for
MCA and one for Capitol. Rolling Stone called
the Gonzos self titled debut record, one
of the best albums to ever come out of Austin.
 |
Bob
Livingston has been called a 'cosmic cowboy' for
good reason. He looks into the music and mysteries
of other cultures and tours countries like India,
Pakistan, Africa, and the Middle East for the
U.S. State Department. During these tours, local
musicians sit in almost every night and they play
with a diversity of themes and influences, mixing
instrumentation and insights from both East and
West. Livingston and Lloyd Maines produced a CD
in 2004 for Vireo Records called Mahatma Gandhi
& Sitting Bull that is infused with the
music and color of his travels. The Austin
Chronicle gives it high marks: "Livingston's
always been a songwriter of the first order, and
the crafting of the album title cut, 'Original
Spirit,' and 'The Prophet Said' bears that out."
 |
Livingston
is touring around the country and abroad promoting
his CD, he still records and plays with Jerry
Jeff, and he's put together a multi-cultural group
of musicians from Texas and India called Cowboys
& Indians. And he and his son, Tucker, are
editing a documentary of their tours in the Middle
East, Africa and South Asia.
Please
join us this evening in welcoming Bob Livingston,
incredible icon of the enduring Texas music
tradition, to our stage. Bradley Kopp, guitarist
extraordinaire, will accompany Bob on his debut
performance at JP Hops House.
We
are also extremely pleased that The Fowler Brothers
will provide the opening set tonight.

The
Moe Hansum Band

This 5-member band, hailing
from Houston, Texas, performs Americana music
with a strong emphasis on traditional acoustic
blues. Their Texas-bred music blends folk blues
|
|
|
with a splash of the soul and rhythm of the Mississippi
Delta. In concert the band presents a variety of their
original tunes, complemented by little-known
covers from artists such as Bukka White, Robert Johnson
and Jimmy Reed.The
Moe Hansum Band has been together in
many incarnations since the early 1990's.
They have performed at the Kerrville Folk Festival
as well as Antones in Austin, Houston's Continental
Club and Dan Electro's Guitar Bar. This band of
exceptionally
talented musicians is
always a JP Hops House favorite.
