Michael Marcoulier & Anthony Klonaris
Michael Marcoullier is no stranger to the Houston music scene from back in the day when Michael, John Vandiver, Shake Russell and Dana Cooper ruled Texas music stages. In recent years Michael has teamed with guitarist Anthony Klonaris. Anthony's extremely diverse musical background includes everything from classical to rock to country and jazz.

Good things are worth waiting for, and the return of Michael and Anthony is definitely one of them. Join us in welcoming the duo back to the JPHH stage.

Carla Ulbrich

A fan favorite on the long-running, nationally syndicated Dr. Demento show, award-winning songwriter and Professional Smart Aleck Carla Ulbrich has been compared to the likes of Weird Al, Chet Atkins and a bologna sandwich.
A better guitar player than most bologna sandwiches, the South Carolina native and former school band geek has a BA in Music
which she currently uses to cover a hole in the wall. She made her singing debut at a pig pickin' on Spring Break in college and has released three CDs to date.
Her songs cover such socially relevant topics as dating for food, the Guinness Book of Records, and a duet with a Klingon. In 2002, Carla suffered two strokes and kidney failure. Undeterred, she re-learned the guitar from scratch that year, spending her many hours in doctors' waiting rooms penning funny parodies about her malady and the absurdity of the health care system. The result was her third CD, Sick Humor release in late 2004. The song "What If Your Butt Was Gone," a parody of one of Carla's own songs, is an audience favorite and is included on Dr. Demento's 2005 Basement Tapes compilation.
Carla has taught guitar at several colleges, Hummingbird Music Camp, and the National Guitar Workshop. She teaches a guitar clinic called "Stuff Every Guitar Player Should Know" and has a music instruction book published with Alfred. She tours all over the country, appearing at various folk venues such as The Bluebird Cafe and Eddie's Attic, festivals including Kerrville and Falcon Ridge, medical and nursing conventions, concert series, science fiction conventions, colleges, numerous radio stations, as well as spots on USA's Up All Night, PAX TV, and XM radio. She has shared the bill with such luminaries as Cheryl Wheeler and Twiggy the Water Skiing Squirrel. Carla Ulbrich is a member of ASCAP and President of the Difficult Last Name Club, likes cheese, and collects bottlecaps.
Opening for Carla this evening are Jim Kam, player of the extraordinary Chapman Stick, and guitarist Tom Tranchilla, who's been described a "finger-picking fool".

Texas Songwriter Showcase
Some of the best singer songwriters from around the state of Texas grace the JPHH stage on
the second Friday of each month. The featured artists for this evening's showcase are Lena Shammas and Robert Frith.
Lena Shammas: Pop rock composer, lyricist, singer and poet, Lena has all the abilities required in a consummate performer. She began by writing poetry at a very young age, then added classical piano and guitar to her music repertoire. Her unique self-style is attributed to her diverse background. As a Christian Kuwaiti and an ambassador's daughter she was exposed from an early age to music from around the world.
Robert Frith: Over the years Robert has garnered critical acclaim for his outstanding original music and electrifying stage shows. He has won the Wildflower! Arts and Music Festival's Singer Songwriter Competition, been a Kerrville Folk Festival's "New Folk" finalist and received numerous Texas Music Award nominations. Most recently Robert was selected as a regional finalist for USA Network's "Nashville Star" 2007 show. Utilizing a style best described as a mix of equal parts Bonnie Raitt, Van Morrison, Willie Nelson, and James Taylor.
Jen Rathbun: A Platinum Plus Universal recording artist with 2 CDs to her credit, Jen sings and writes multi-faceted compositions loaded with personality. She's a pro at tickling the ivories, and she'll tickle your fancy as well.
Jeff Hoofard: Jeff has been playing drums for local and national acts since 1986 sharing the stage with such icons as Bo Diddley and Chubby Checker as well as some of Texas’ best acoustic artists. He has been the percussionist of choice on several recording projects and is currently playing with Willie B & The Silverbacks. Jeff is our "house" percussionist.
Michael Pope: Co-founder and co-host of this showcase, Michael has been writing songs for a few years now. Many of his original's are open tuned, 5 finger picking, folk jazz instrumentals, but his lyrics are strong and reflect his life's experiences. Michael has one CD to his credit so far.
The Texas Songwriters' Showcase is the longest running showcase in Houston. These songwriters will take to the stage to entertain you with colossal musical talent and wide-ranging experience ... you will not be disappointed.

Kevin So
A Brighter Day CD Release
Critically acclaimed musician Kevin So has something special going on. He stands apart from the numberless hordes of singer-songwriters with his highly personal and artistically vibrant hybrid music of r&b, rock, jazz, blues, soul, folk, and hip-hop. “My music’s what I am,” the Brooklyn resident says with typical generosity of spirit. “It’s who I am. It’s a fusion of many things. I don’t like to pigeonhole myself in any style. If anything, I like to call it pop music, which covers a broad spectrum of music.”
“Kevin So presents his life and times in brash strokes of insight, wit, and empathy, all underscored by a deeply felt pride in being both Asian and American.” ~ The Boston Globe
The print and cyberspace media (to name just three, The Austin Chronicle, The Boston Globe, and NewspaperTaxi.net) have joined radio programmers all around the country in taking notice of Kevin So’s marvelous music, starting with his appearance on the Boston folk scene in the mid-1990s and continuing up to the present as a road warrior with a strong national fan base. Among the most prestigious concert stops that So has made in his career are the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas, Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago, the Beacon Theatre in Manhattan, the Fillmore West in San Francisco, and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.
“An original talent and tremendous performer.” ~ Billy Bragg
Many leading musicians are included enthusiastic supporters of So’s music, including Billy Bragg, Keb’ Mo’ (whose recent album, Peace… Back By Popular Demand, has the So & Mo’ collaboration, “Talk”), Mary Lou Lord, Joe Cocker, Martin Sexton, Richie Havens, and Amos Lee. So’s recordings, not least the live set The So Must Go On (2005), the double-disc Leaving The Lights On (2003), which he calls his “thank-you to the Asian-American community,” and Individual (1997), have been brisk international sellers. A musical play based on his life is in the works in NYC; a 45-minute version of the production opened to a warm response at the New York Musical Theatre Festival.
Kevin's latest CD, A Brighter Day, was recorded live in the studio without any tape gimmicks. Released on the indie WingBone label, it captures all the energy and cool of So living in New York City in 2006-07. “The album is the realization that music is the power,” says So. “Music is what you have. ‘Music is its own reward’ jazz drummer Bob Moses used to tell me. Just be grateful. The answer to all my problems and concerns is when I present gratitude instead of attitude. It changes the whole light on a situation.” A Brighter Day is this Asian-American troubadour’s most mature and accomplished artistic statement yet.

Butch Morgan and Matt Harlan
Never let it be said that Claude "Butch" Morgan isn't passionate about life. His songs are often spiritual in nature, but they're full of fun and carry simple but powerful messages. Butch Morgan has an ability to take life's simplicity and put a striking message inside in the form of a song, a great example being his "God Drives A Pick-up Truck". Morgan's "Blubberball" is an attest to all that can go wrong when you don't take care of yourself, and is a song performed entirely with one chord. As Butch says, "It starts off in G, then goes to G for the solos, then we wrap it up in G." He is an exciting performer who uses his sense of humor and life experiences to touch people.
Butch was a finalist in the 2005 Kerrville New Folk Songwriting Competition. In 2004 he won the prestigious Wildflower Art & Music Festival Songwriting Contest, where he was also the recipient of the festival's Peoples Choice Award in 2004.
Matt Harlan is a songwriter's songwriter, composing scenic landscapes and pointed statements disguised as songs ... often non-linear, but always melodic. Harlan's works confront social norms, celebrate lives overlooked, or just wax poetic about coffee and bus-stops. Whatever the inspiration, the music is always heartfelt and genuine. Matt took First Place in the 2006 American Songwriter Lyric Contest for his song "Waiting For Godot." His debut CD, Live and Rambling, will be available at the show.

The Moe Hansum Band

This 4-member band,
hailing from Houston, Texas, performs Americana music with a strong emphasis on traditional acoustic blues. Their Texas-bred music

Moe Hansum Band
blends folk blues with a splash of the soul and rhythm of the Mississippi Delta blues. In concert the band presents a variety of their original tunes, complemented by little-known covers from artists such as Bukka White, Robert Johnson and Jimmy Reed. The Moe Hansum Band has been together in many incarnations since the early 1990's.
The instrumentation currently consists of two acoustic and resonator guitarists, Mike Durbin and Chuck Schwarz, upright acoustic bassist Sandy Buller and drummer Stephan B. Miller. They have performed at the Kerrville Folk Festival and many other locations across Texas. This band of exceptionally talented musicians is always a JP Hops House favorite. Moe's music can be healing and therapeutic for those longing for an authentic voice in traditional and modern folk blues.
