Fahl & Folk
The band Fahl & Folk is the newest vehicle for David Fahl’s music. The basic sound is the traditional folkie vocal, acoustic guitar, and harmonica, with Michael Farber’s electric bass adding a groove that turns up the energy level way past the cliched mellow associated (often in error) with the folksinger trip. This pair is frequently augmented by Jimmy Deen on acoustic and electric guitars, and Chaz Nadege on keyboard and snare drum.
The Fahl & Folk sound is both familiar and innovative. The instrumentation is simple and familiar-sounding. The songs hit comfortable grooves and go places where folksingers are seldom heard. Fahl’s songs come from a perspective that uses all the traditions we hear around us and twists them into new combinations, telling stories about lovers, murderers, and the helpless schmoes who just have a hard time dealing with life in this bizarre new millenium. When the band does a cover tune, it’s rarely one from the standards of ‘classic rock’, and it never sounds like the way you’re used to hearing it.
So come hear for yourself!

Gary Seber
Music changes for Tonight
Unfortunately, Rhett Butler had to cancel due to an illness in his family. Gary Seber has graciously stepped up to fill our Saturday night with his wonderful music.
So.......this is the scoop on Gary.....
His style is informally classified as "acoustic percussive fingerstyle" guitar. But these are hardly adequate words to describe the experience of Gary Seber's music flooding over you, or bearing witness to his fingers flying over wound steel and carved wood. His debut album, Candle Power, features the highly innovative but little-known technique of playing the neck of an open-tuned guitar, coaxing an amazing abundance of sound from the solo instrument.
As with many on the cutting edge of new musical expression, music has been an integral part of Gary's life from a very young age. His mother, an elementary school music teacher, started him off with a ukulele at age nine, and soon after he discovered the guitar. Gary spent thirteen young years in England and three years in Singapore, returning to the States brimming with the influence of legends such as James Taylor, Leo Kotke, Neil Young and the Beatles. With his discovery of guitarist Preston Reed, he proceeded to teach himself this entirely new way of playing the guitar. His mastery of this new medium naturally evolved into his composition of a variety of original material.
Opening for Gary will be Heather Romero and Zed Daniels. Please join us on this musical experience and be prepared to be wowed!

Mark Beets & Ray Younkin
with Wayne Wilkerson & Jeff Hoofard

Join us this evening for music from four talented
Houston musicians.
Mark Beets: According to Ken Gaines, fellow musician, "Mark's music will sneak up on you. One minute you're listening politely and the next minute you're either laughing or crying your eyes out." His is a sound which has been called "Organic Americana". It's fresh, different from most of the stuff out there today. Long Ago & Many Days is Mark's debut collection of songs produced by White Cat Productions.
Ray Younkin: Ray Younkin uses his talent to tell stories, and wonderful stories they are. Every Shake Russell fan will marvel at Younkin’s voice. Dylan fans will remark of Younkin’s lyrics. Tommy Elskes fans will enjoy Younkin’s delivery. Balladeer fans rejoice, Ray Younkin is one of the best ever.
Wayne Wilkerson: One half of "Houston's premier duo for folk from the heart ... Wayne adds just the right amount of spice to serve up a rare ambrosia for your soul." ~ Texas Firelight Theater
Jeff Hoofard: Jeff has been playing drums for local and national acts since 1986 sharing the stage with such icons as Bo Diddley and Chubby Checker as well as some of Texas’ best acoustic artists. He has been the percussionist of choice on several recording projects and is currently playing with Willie B & The Silverbacks. Tonight he is our "house" percussionist.

Jim Kam & Jan Seides & April Kelly
Jim Kam: Relatively new to the Houston music scene, Jim is developing a reputation and a following for his extraordinary albeit unorthodox ability as an instrumentalist. This Tomball, Texas-based musician, whose primary instrument is the Chapman Stick, was originally trained as a classical pianist. His repertoire on the Stick is an eclectic blend of classical, jazz, folk, rock, pop, blues, and traditional genres with the occasional Celtic ballad tossed in for good measure.
Jan Seides: Spanning genres, this singer/songwriter's songs combines down-home honesty with up-town sophistication. Jan has an eclectic writing and performing style: folk to pop to jazz. In 1992 she released her first solo album, Slowly but Surely which garnered national and international radio play."Everyday People, Jan Seides' latest recording, was released by Panda Productions in 2002. This CD has garnered glowing reviews, frequent radio airplay and has claimed songwriting awards.
April Kelly: Someone said that April writes like "Carole King meets Sheryl Crow" and has a strong voice reminiscent of Carly Simon. But, as nice as these comparisons are, April has a sound that's truly all her own. A songwriting chameleon, her music is a mix of emotional highs and lows: She'll take you to the depths of emotion and next, she'll 'zing' you with a humorous song that's witty, profound or just plain crazy.

Stan & Paul CD Release Party
"Stan and Paul" are award-winning accoustic musicians who perform original music in and around Houston, Texas. Their songs generally focus on the fun and entertaining side of life. They have been described as “wonderfully witty” and “frickin’ funny,” and are often compared to The Smothers Brothers (quite a compliment).
This duo first came to us at an open mic and had instant fans! Since then, they have been a feature music act at Mudbug Madness I & II and at Spudstock IV. Tonight Stan and Paul showcase their talent and personalities with the release of their debut CD The National Bank of Dad. In addition to their songwriting, Paul is an amazing magician and usually works in a little abracadabra during the night. They tickle my funny bone and will do the same for you!
There will be plenty of food, special decorations, and lots of laughs.
Smythe & Taylor will provide the opening set this evening.
