Foscoe Jones & the Distractions

These high-energy Austin youths wowwed 'em on the westside when they debued here in October. In January the band chose JPHH for
the Houston launching of the band's new CD, A Song Like This, which was equally well-received.
"They're really different. You know, good different...the kind of different that makes a difference!" ~ Pam
"Foscoe has an amazing hypnotic voice that infuses itself into your soul and captivates you. His intensity and onstage presence draw you in and hold you there during his whole set." ~ Dallasmusic.com
Foscoe Jones & the Distractions' music is an eclectic mix of acoustic rock, old school country blues, and funky Americana.

Jack Saunders with Rick Poss

Jack Saunders has been a part of the Texas music scene since the 70’s. In recent years Jack has garnered Best Acoustic Honors from the Houston Press Music Awards; in 1998, 1999 and 2001, plus he was nominated in multiple categories, and won the 2000 "Critic's Choice" award for overall excellence in writing and performance.
"The good writers are storytellers. They’ve got a good eye for detail and a gift for language. Jack Saunders is at that level. It’s in the little details; [His are] songs that any tunesmith would be proud to have written. No doubt about it: this is a major league songwriter." ~ Inside Houston
"Rick Poss is the guitarist I was raving about. It's a rare guitarist, in my experience, that can hide out and play rhythm or whatever, then reach out and grab you by the throat with his playing when it's his turn to take the floor. This cat is a cat. Beautiful, just beautiful. " ~ The Fat Guy

April 29, 2004 - Thursday
Preacher Boy with Collin Brooks
"If you've ever seen Preacher Boy perform solo, whether supporting Eagle-Eye Cherry throughout the world or any of Preacher Boy's US or European tours, then you know how much vibe he can generate with just the raw emotion of his voice, the keening of his slide on his vintage National, and the thump and brush of his fingers picking steel strings." ~ preacherboy.com

If not, you're in for a treat when Preacher Boy, on a short break from supporting Charlie Mussellwhite on tour, takes to the stage at JP Hops House. We welcome the Brooklyn-based artist as he crisscrosses the country promoting his fifth, full-length CD, Demanding To Be Next. Also, make sure to look (rather listen) for Preacher Boy's vocal contribution to An Area Big Enough To Do It In, the Prophet Omega cut on the upcoming Columbia Records' Queer Eye For The Straight Guy soundtrack.
"Preacher Boy is somewhat like Keb' Mo' in his jazzing up of Delta blues styles, but with a more contemporary sound akin to Kelly Joe Phelps or Chris Whitley. The best cuts highlight his wonderful work on National Steel." ~ Rolling Stone Jazz and Blues Album Guide
"Preacher Boy crosses the traditional country blues of haunted legends like Robert Johnson and Son House with a modern, rock-inlfuenced perspective similar to Jon Spencer or Jack White of The White Stripes, branding the sound with his own distinctive mark." ~ All-Music Guide
Joining in on this evening's festivities is Austin, Texas songwriter Collin Brooks, an excellent slide guitarist in his own right.

April 30, 2004 - Friday
Brian Kalinec with Jeff Chambers
Come on over tonight and help us welcome the return of Brian Kalinec together with newcomer Jeff Chambers. Although Brian has previously performed at JPHH, this is his debut appearance in the lead role.

"In early 2002, Brian teamed up with Jeff Chambers, a Houston singer-songwriter-guitarist. Jeff and Brian trade off songs, original and cover tunes, as well as lead guitar licks. Jeff and Brian have performed at local Houston venues..., as well as private parties. Brian also returns to Beaumont once a month to perform with Rick Danna at Cody's. Brian is currently recording his debut CD."
~ briankalinec.com
"Kalinec has been playing around Houston and writing songs going all the way back to the late '60s, and he has a deft touch with a lyric and an above-average amount of wise leavening gained in the school of experience and living. " ~ William Michael Smith, Rockzillaworld Magazine
